How much room do you have over the tank? What are the top's dimensions. The ah supply ones are designed to go end-to-end. I'm not sure your tank is wide enough to accomodate this. The two 20w coralife bulbs would probably work, although without a reflector of some sort you'll lose a lot...

I wouldn't remove too much at once...You'd be removing a large portion of your filter system. If the pieces are simply too large, I'd take them out, whack 'em with a hammer to break them up and then put it all back. If you've got mostly fist-sized pieces it's pretty easy to remove one or two...
