My percs host both my GBTA, and RBTA. They also both liked the electric green carpet that I had for about a week. The black ocellaris I had was hosting a GBTA in the store when I got it, but never, ever hosted the GBTA I had in the tank with it. B

There's no reason for you to have your lights on during the tank cycle, it will only spur algae and diatom blooms. The spots on the rock sound like the start of a diatom bloom now. The lights don't help anything except algae and diatoms at this stage so leaving them off won't hurt anything. B

How many and what type of fish you do plan to have in it? If you're only gonna have 1-2 small fish, then a 3g water change weekly would probably take care of your waste export for this sized tank. However if you plan on having 5-6, and/or would rather do a monthly water change not a weekly...

Are you using black sand? It looks like it in the pic. I tried it in a small 10g tank at one point. I liked it for a bit, but as stuff dropped on it from the LR, it started looking more salt/pepper, and I didn't like it as much anymore. When I moved I scrapped the tank altogether. B

I think it has to do with low bioloads and more water changes than are done with normal tanks. I don't see why you couldn't run a tank without any filtration and just regular water changes. But filtration is very cheap for a nano, so I don't see any reason to skip it, since it does add to the...
