noob starting a 5 gal nano

Welcome to the forum. Yeah as Tim says, here in Australia we would use natural salt water (NSW) primarily. I would never buy salt when I am surrounded by the real deal. It's safe here and having been to hawaii, I would have to presume it is safe over there. Especially considering the reefs...

    My new aptasia treatment.

Don't know if is completely successful but I think it's all good for now. I noticed my first aptasia last week. SHOCK,,HORROR.. What do I do?? I thought I'll squash it... No, that might make more. What if I break off the LR it's on?....but there is my first bit of coraline right in that...

Hi from a newbie, planning my nano

You can certainly add corals before anemones. You can start putting some corals in there as soon as the cycle is complete. I have only learnt from my mistakes and lots of reading after the mistakes, but if I was going to start again, I would run my first lot of live rock and sand for 3...

Hi from a newbie, planning my nano

Sound like this tank is well planned. here is some reading you might be interested in. http://www.ronshimek.com/deep_sand_beds.html www.asira.org You may also want to search for articles on keeping anemones in aquariums. They can thrive, but the long term success rate is poor and...

    looking for new tank

Why not buy a nice little glass tank and fit it out yourself? I think they are much better for temperature control and you get to put in the pumps and lights that YOU want.

    Lfs Water Readings?

That must be incorrect. everything would be dead at 100. Just ask them what their readings are next time you are in. They will be able to tell you. Maybe also take your test kit in to check against thiers.

    Finally put my tank together...

Maybe you should go for some mushrooms or xenia for a start. LPS corals such as frogspawn are fairly adaptable but need very stable conditions when they are moved. eg from the LFS to your tank. They are also more likely to foul your tank if they decide to go belly up. You might also...

    A PICO!

Couldn't help myself I was desperate to have a crack at a pico. I ordered a coupled of 2 Gal tanks from an online store going out of busines, unfortunately they turned up cracked. 4 bucks down the drain! I picked up 2 small glass tanks from an importer. Pulled one apart and cut the...

    Lights for 2.5 gallon

You need to make a mark on the back of the tank that will indicate a full mark. You replace RO top up water to that fill line regularly to maintain salinity. Water changes should be occuring twice a week on a tank of this size. Aim for 10% of the volume for each change. Topping up...

    Lights for 2.5 gallon

Looks like your corals are a bit stressed. Keep up the regular water changes and they should be ok. The star polyps can take weeks to come out after a move from the LFS.

    Got my tank and stand!

The dark stuff there is a type of calciferous algae common on live rock. I have not seen it grow at any great rate in an aquarium but you may find that it will be there for a long time.

    gule live rock or not

Maybe later when you know what your corals will be. the coral almost always comes on some LR and you will need to move your LR around to accomodate it. You can use an epoxy glue when you are happy with your coral placements.

    First water change?

If you do small changes, you can do them daily. It would be great for you cycle if you could do 5% per day. You should be doing 10% twice a week in my opinion. Can you give us some details on your system. Maybe start a thread similar to mine (below) or others that have links in their...

    flow issues and more!

I think going with the stock pump for your filtraltrion will be better. YOu need some low flow areas in the back so that the macro algae stays where it should and the LR rubble has a chance to do it's thing. There are plenty of powerheads on the market that you can drop into your display to...

    24 g fish stocking question

You could build a fish only system and have a couple more small fish in than that but it depends what you want. If you want a reef, the less fish the better. (because they foul the water)

    Some brief advice for begginners

http://saltwateraquariumadvice.com/blog/ Here is a little page with some basic info for people that are very new to reefing or thinking about getting into it. It's not all the info you need to keep a successful tank but it's not a bad start.

    Finally put my tank together...

I don't think that anyone else has had success after a 4 week cycle. there is no such thing as a 4 week cycle.
