    Diatom Bloom

The only answer I can give is when it's safe. :D Test your water, there should be 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and as close to 0 as you can get with nitrate (for corals at least, fish have *some* tolerance to nitrate). Of course you should have a rise in all of these (a spike in the nitrogen...

    3 gal Pico

Nice! And it looks like you put some serious thought on what you put in there.

My First Pico.. An Updated Document

^ +1 (although instant ocean is a pretty reliable salt - it doesn't do anything AWESOME, but it is very reliable and consistent with its parameters)

    Lighting for Red Sea Max?

Jesse, they claim to T5s although I have not seen them up close. With my T5 setup I keep clams, monticap, and birdsnest with no issues although they are in the upper half of my tank. I don't know anything about this tank, just that T5 can help high demand light critters thrive - not just live.

    Diatom Bloom

Diatom bloom is normal and will clear up so long as there are no other contributors to algae growth (overfeeding, bad bulbs, no flow, bad water). A good clean up crew will resolve most normal issues too. I like nassarius snails as they live in the sand and do quite a good job at cleaning that...

    Finally put my tank together...

True zooxanthellae are very important, but not a bacteria though. You are right, I'm no expert - I just pass on the info I research and let others know what worked for me. Please share your experience. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/feb2002/cw.htm

    Finally put my tank together...

Posts deleted at request of thread starter. Note: This is a forum to share and help all. Any and all help is welcome, but let's please remember that we all have opinions. For any algae it is generally a good idea to increase water flow, check that source water is clean (no nutrients)...

Hinges on a 29 bio cube top?

You're right, I'd rather use nylon than metal (even if it IS stainless steel). Attaching will still be the most interesting part I think.

    Hair algae? Please say no.

Use a clean water source, increase flow, reduce nutrient import, and do a couple extra water changes. I don't see any cyano. (Cyano is a bacteria, not an algae FYI)

I really love the colors too.

Hinges on a 29 bio cube top?

I've never thought to do this. I imagine stainless steel hinges may do what you want. Fastening is bound to be interesting though.

My First Pico.. An Updated Document

RO/DI is best, then RO, then distilled (if you MUST). Drinking water and tap water are a big source of issues, so I recommend avoid them like the plague.

The individual reflectors are what make the T5s such a good source of light. Other wise they are just big power compacts. Nova extreme seem to used quite a bit, just I recommend buying from a reputable source in case of issues with shipping or damage to the bulbs.

New to Nanotank.com! My first Nano, and others.

Very nice! By the way :welcome to Nanotank.com! Well for a 2 gallon tank I don't a clown fish is the best bet. Actually I don't think any fish would do well. Sexy shrimp and other inverts can do OK. Anemones are another thing that wouldn't do well in just 2 gallons. Try your hand at a...

To Canopy or Not to Canopy, that is the question...

Appears that you like the pendant look so why not see if a MH pendant is in your price range? I love the shimmer MH gives, but my fish is a jumper so I have T5s in a canopy.

No the lights are the size stated. The hammer and frogspawn should be *OK*. But if you want to make sure everything thrives a couple T5s with individual reflectors will get you there with just a small increase in price but no heat increase. 20" long light fixture will work fine for you. I...
