I have a friend with one in a 10 gallon with a couple of small seahorses and she says he is always moving around his burrow sifting sand. You definately need at least a 5" sandbed in order to keep him happy though.

A cycle can be triggered by disturbing the lower layers in a deep sandbed but the sandbeds we usually keep in a nano are not that deep so with a little caution you should be fine. You may want to keep some extra water around for a little while to make sure it doesn't cause a small cycle though...

I just thought of something that may help me prove my point. Take 2 same sized buckets and fill them to the top with water and place 2 of the same powerheads/pumps in each with a hose attatched and set them up to pump into the other pumps bucket. In theory since both pumps have the same rating...

I don't think a power outage will cause any problems but it will be all but impossible to match the flowrates in both the filter and the return pump. Like I already mention if either is off or gets off over time that will end up causing a flood.

I don't think it will work because you would have to be able to match the flow coming from the filter drain with the flowrate from the return pump, if either of these is off you will either run the sump dry and flood the tank or overflow the sump.

Yes its fine to add a skimmer later. The other problem that came to my mind with the skimmer you have is that it goes in the tank and with only 10 gallons of space loosing any of it can be a bad thing.

I have to agree, skip the mandarin until you upgrade to a larger tank. Then you'll have to find something else to put in the 5 :mrgreen:

Remember that running skimmerless is an very realistic option as well. You can control your nitrates by not over feeding or over stocking along with doing weekly water changes of at least 10%, not only does this keep the bad stuff down but it also replenishes your trace elements, calcium...

It really does pay to be nice.

That kinda messes up their established/claimed territory and they have to start over. If the problem reoccurs you may have to trade one of the fish in or move them to another tank. Good luck

Its usually the MiniJet 606 that people use for this changeout. Others have used Rios or MaxiJets but I have also heard of some people complaining of heat issues afterwards, not sure which pumps caused the heat probs though.
