Reefman has you pretty well covered. One thing I would change is the bulb on the light fixture to a 50/50 bulb, this will help bring out the colors of the fish even if it is only a FOWLR. With a single hang-on filter you may also need a powerhead to help prevent dead spots (areas with no...

    Oh Boy....My Winter project...

The coloration of the zoos has alot to do with the lighting they are under. I bought some that were a nice medium blue but when place under the lighting in my tank they had a more gray appearance. They will color back up alot of times if placed back under the original type of lighting.

    Tips for buying live rock

Another advantage to porous LR is that it will take less LR to fill your tank meaning less weight to fill the same area, this will make it cheaper to fill your tank with rock.

:welcome to nanotank! Reefman has covered this pretty well. A standard 10 gallon would make alot better starter tank for a saltwater aquarium. If you are planning on keeping corals decide what you want, that will help determine the lighting you need. If you want to do a FOWLR (fish only...

    New 2.5G my first Nano

I like the sand in there better too. It also will help to anchor the LR where you want it. Keep the updates coming.

Here we go starting my first nano... *LOOK*

The AQ 70 with a AQ 20 impellar should do fine for a refugium, there is a thread dealing with this mod here: http://www.nanotank.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1307 . On the lighting either change the bulb out for a 50/50 or better yet if you have the room add a second fixture with an actinic bulb...

My tank is crashing i think

Here is a good fixture for a 10 gallon: http://www.hellolights.com/201xcoaqpcho.html . You could also use a MH pendant or build a canopy and install a retrofit or make a fixture in the canopy out of DIY parts. If you want to keep higher light corals then a MH kind of like this would be a...

    Tips for buying live rock

:welcome to nanotank! One of the first things to look for is to make sure it is not covered in nuisance algae like hair algae, bubble algae (valonia), etc. I would also want to know if the tank has ever been treated with copper because the copper gets into the pores of the LR and leaches...

My tank is crashing i think

I must have misread that part but his corals dying off could also cause the ammonia spikes in the same way that fish decomposition will cause spikes. Thanks for keeping me on my toes.

Putting a 12G DX canopy onto a OG tank?

I do know that the hinges are different. You can try contacting Chris at www.nanocustoms.com and he can tell you if it can be done and if you need any other parts to change it out. He can probably supply the parts needed if applicable.

    Oh Boy....My Winter project...

All I have to say is that tank has turned out even better than I though it possible. I love the corals, zoos, gorgonians, etc. Kudos to a job well done. I wasn't suggesting blocking off each end of your tank, I just thought it was an interesting thread dealing with modding the same tank. I...

    Reefman's 20 gallon long stand...

Looks great! If you think there is a chance that you will ever want to place a sump under the tank then I would leave the back as is so air can circulate, if it is going to be used for storage only then its a matter of choice. Your design appears to be sturdy enough without adding a full back...

    Reef safe crab???

I agree that this one sounds like a major meat eater and a killer. Donate him to a LFS, sump, or maybe even donate him to a hungry triggerfish!

    pc light

I think that depends on the ballast, if its an electronic ballast then I think it would work the way you describe. Why do you want to run 4 24 watt bulbs? Since you mentioned that they would be run along side of VHOs that says that the tank is at least 24 inches and standard 55 watt PCs are 21...

    Powdery green algae

I have sopmetimes seen an algae like you describe for a week or so as part of a new tank syndrome, it will go away if thats the case. You also may try shortening your lighting period a bit to help this pass. What kind of lighting are you using? If you have a magnetic type ballast it could be...

My tank is crashing i think

Sadie covered it pretty well from the information we have. I am concerned that you don't know the salinity though, do you have a hydrometer or refractometer? You said you do weekly water changes but do you topoff with freshwater before each water change? If you don't your salinity may have...
