If you want SPS I think a wave maker and several more powerheads would be a wise investment. I don't have any experience with SPS, I'm just going off what I've read on this site.

If you are worried about evaporation put a good lid on it or get a auto top off unit. Shrimp are always great choices, maybe a sexy shrimp or two instead of fish?

That particular skimmer is iffy IMO. I returned it because I did not like it. But you may not "need" the skimmer. If you do weekly water changes you should be fine. Your water will be clearer/cleaner with a skimmer but with such a small tank I don't think it's a must.

Mix the buffer in the top off water until it matches the P.H. of your tank water then you can put it under your tank with no huge worries (If you use the mix make sure to mix well). Some people dose kalk (calcium) in their top off water. Ask someone with more experience with kalk though, I'm...

I don't do the skimming (but I will add one later I'm sure, when I increase my bioload) but all I use is buffer on my top off water.
