What test are you using for your Alk? 1.0 meq/L is very low... 1.0 dKH is even lower... which measurement is that in? I would suggest >2.8 dKH (>8.0 meq/L). Everything else sounds good. What kind of hermits did you get? Jesse

    what kind of salt

It's more of a crazy retail pre-packaged price vs. local fish store per-gallon price. Catalina water is a regional thing though... there may be different brands of what is basically the same thing in your area. BTW, :welcome to nanotank.com Mr_Detail! Jesse

    "T5 Lighting" Vs "The Rest"

That tank is a perfect candidate IMO. As far as many reef tanks not using them, they are relatively new technology and it will just be a matter of time. Many people are using them to supplement their lower kelvin MHs, but an all-T5HO tank is not as common. Here are some examples of...

    "T5 Lighting" Vs "The Rest"

Well said. I can say, though, that the upfront cost can pay off in the long run in that the lamps only need to be changes every 18-24 months if they are properly cooled and not being overdriven by a IC ballast. You get huge flexibilty in color temp because of the huge assortment of lamps...

    Tank setup help

Yeah the 30g cubes are great. I would have to agree with John that the 30" long tanks are a small challenge to light in that there are virtually no 30" long fixtures except maybe the Sunpod. The 24" long tanks are easier to find fixtures for... a standard 20g is a good choice for this...

    Live Rock, Sludge and Worms?

Can I ask you to start a new thread for this question? It will allow a better opportunity for your question to be read and answered and also keep this thread on track. In short, get a couple test kits including nitrates, nitrites and ammonia, test the water after the introduction on the live...

    SAND OR NO SAND

I would highly suggest a sand bed UNLESS... you plan on a very high turnover (75-100x or more) SPS tank with an excellent skimmer and chemical media setup. Sand beds can offer many benefits and should be incorporated IMO. Jesse BTW, :welcome to nanotank.com!

Advantages of 24 gallon to 12 gallon? (other than just size)

    Jesse's 20L SPS tank

Thanks John. I agre with you about the 900's. I'll get a couple of those on a NaturalWave. I think with the return running through the SQWD and alternating every 8 seconds or so and the 2 900's alternating as well, that will provide a very random, natural movement. I am pretty happy with...

    5.5g tank.

I personally wouldnt trust anything from aquatraders.com... I have just heard too may bad things aboiut their products. OTher people might want to chime in, but i personally wouldnt suggest a UV sterilizer for this small of a system either. Here is a quote about sterilizers from Eric...

LOL yeah it can be very challenging to get a good illustration. Have you checked out this site? http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html All down the left side there you will see a whole bunch of different designs that will work for all sorts of various situations... they should all be...

    Jesse's 20L SPS tank

Okay... so it has been 4 days since my last test. No testing, no water changes. Here are the new results: Mg= 1425 dKH= 8.00 dKH (2.86 meq/L) Ca= 430 Those results were pretty much what I expected. Now I can work on a regimen to keep these levels more stable. I will most likely be doing...

    help with sump/fuge.

I dont quite understand the different compartments. As far as the equipment goes, I would suggest skipping the UV. They are really only pratical for very very large systems like those in public aquariums. Everything else sounds good but maybe you can get a better drawing of how you are going...

    Feeding fish

My YWG staight up ignores the food when he is done. The clown will eat a little more than the YWG, but he too will begin to ignore the food when he is full. Remember that it is much better to under-feed than over-feed. At one point I was only feeding my fish once or twice a week. The goby...
