1st cycle on my 1st nano tank

So you guys are saying to wait a month after the cycle to add any livestock? What is going to happen to the bacteria that feed off of ammonia or nitrites if you have no bio-load? I have always assumed that you didn't want to wait too long because those bacteria's food supply isn't available at...

1st cycle on my 1st nano tank

This is a good idea to help keep algae and diatom levels down Not entirely true. Once your levels reach zero, do a 10%-20% water change. Most people will wait a week just to make sure that you don't get another ammonia spike. Then it should be safe to add livestock This isn't needed and...

    Is this tank workable?

I can't really give you any votes because I would need to know if the tank could even hold water without it breaking apart. It sounds like everything was loose during shipping and it may have weakened the glass some. I would fill it and check for leaks. If no leaks then I would add all the...

    29g Trogdor's Paradise

I have finally added some new livestock to my tank. Monday 4/2/2007, I added a skunk cleaner shrimp and a glass/ghost shrimp (my LFS had is labeled as a Saron but I'm 99% sure that it's not) Today 4/14/2007, we had our annual frag swap and I picked up several frags. Frogspawn, two frags...

    29 gallon Oceanic

Oh it does displace some amount of water. If you put in a 6" deep sand bed it doesn't displace the entire 6" volume of water. There is still water that flows between the grains of sand. The amount that it displaces is relative to the grain size of the sand.

actually you loose about 3% (on a 1/8" wall tank). I can't see how you can loose 9g of water displacement with sand and live rock. Most equipment can hold more water than is displaces, like a skimmer or a HOB filter. And if you actually filtered your sand, you will find that its total...

Wild crab eats fish now white moving things

Coral can go in right after the cycle. I assume by tube worms you are referring to the classic feather dusters. I would give it a month or so after the cycle. They are more sensitive, like shrimp, to water conditions. Giving it a month or so lets it settle in and balance out. I waited just...

    EMERGENCY, expertise needed!!!

I'm sorry for your shrimp. I think his survival rate isn't going to be good. The best that you can do is what you have already done, putting him in a separate tank and hope that he recovers. You can try and put a large sponge on your intake to keep the little critters from being sucked in...

Wild crab eats fish now white moving things

First off, welcome to Nanotank. Congrats on getting through your cycle. I know it can be a bear watching it with nothing in there. More than likely your crab didn't kill your mollie. Crabs are scavengers for the most part (unless they fancy a snails shell) and if you see them munching on...

    nitrates up!!

something is off balance. do you have a mechanical filter and has the media/filters been changed recently? I would definitely do atleast a 10% water change to drive the ammonia down. What size of a tank is it (sorry i loose track of everyone's tank size)? You can try Prime from Seachem it...

Water adjustments affecting Shrimp? & fan worm query.

Actually I would recommend a smaller and more frequent water change. Something like 1-2 gallons per week. I personally do 2½-3 gallons per week in my 29g tank. I wasn't suggesting buffing iodine, but that it affects molting more than calcium. In a 24g tank you should be getting enough from...

Water adjustments affecting Shrimp? & fan worm query.

Just so you know, Iodine levels affect the molting more than calcium. I don't think your calcium was really that high. I don't have experience with calcium and buffering it so I can't really comment. Sounds like a bit of coincidence to me. What inhabitants do you have in the tank?

    Still having Algae Problems

can you drop the link to the pdf file? Tap water can have all kinds of affects on our tanks. Personally I run it in my tanks but have been considering changing to RO water. It's just one more way to keep the tanks balanced.

So what are your hobbies other than nano tanks?

I've been working on a ham radio license for awhile now. I bought the books last summer and planned on taking the tests in the fall. Only problem is that the tank came and i spent my money on that instead of a new radio. Go figure...lol I still enjoy listening to the area police on my...

    29 gallon Oceanic

Remember this phrase: Dilution is the solution to pollution Basically the more water that you have the slower that it takes for things to go wrong. The system will behave like a larger tank if you run a sump and will be easier to maintain consistency.

That's true about the lighting. But once you get the coral bug then you will need better lights.
