Using trash to build a top notch reef tank

I've used egg crate dozens of times to help build bridges. Often I'll use black zip ties to secure live rock rubbles or smaller chunks to cover the crate. Works excellent and it's removable too! Cameron

Modding an aquaclear500 for use as refugium

Yes, I have. Mine has been running for ~6 months now and I've had no issues. I did have to fumble with my baffle for a while to make sure I could keep turbulance down and keep critters from getting blown left and right. Here are some pics.... Mopre can be seen here...

What is the longest you have gone without a water change?

I've gone 6 months w/o changes. Tank did great and water tests showed everything was great BUT after I did a water change I could see a visible difference in expansion and growth. My normal routine is a 10-20% change every 3-4 weeks. Cameron

    Water flow in 'fuges

Baffling is really key IMO, as has been noted. After dealing with hundreds of fuges in all sorts of common and awkward sizes I've noticed actual GPH levels really don't mean much.....keeping the flow from bashing critters is key. I think I messed around with the baffling on my AC500 fuge for...

    My 2nd intro......

Hey guys....I found this site quite a few months ago, made a few posts, then kinda fell off the planet. Too many classes and too many other priorities kept me offline for the last few months. Now I'm just trying to get back into the swing of things 8). Just thought I'd reintroduce myself after...

Got my ac500 fuge setup and fuge lights on my minibow...

I got my Aquaclear 500 today so I could get a fuge done on my minibow. Cut a baffle and glued it in (it's a 6" tall baffle), placed ~2.5" on sand from my 150 in it, and a few pieces of live rock. I hooked it up to a new Aquaclear surface skimmer. I've been running the thing at full flow and...

    Metal Halide

6-10" is the general height. No lower however...too close to the water surface! It's a good idea to start at a taller height (say 12") and over a week or 2 gradually lower it to a preferred height. This will acclimate everything in the tank to the much brighter lighting. 8" is an ideal height...

Flatworms and how to get rid of them?

I've always gone with the 6-line. In my first reef I got flatworms and tried a sixline. Worked really well and from that point I've always kept one in my reefs. It helps that it's a reallt beautiful fish as well. Never tried any other way....never needed to. I've heard of the velvet damsel...
