Pics of my new, (to me), office tank.

Not much. I've got a few zoo frags, a green rasta leather, 1 sexy shrimp and 1 Harlequin in there. Just finally got the new bulb to replace the actinic bulb I've been having to use. I'll try to get some pics later in the week. B

    T5 lights

When I looked at them I seem to recall different people running them different ways. All of the setups at reefgeek.com have 2 bulbs to a ballast, but I remember threads talking about folks running 6 bulbs off an icecap 660 ballast. I only looked into it enough to figure out that I wouldn't...

    T5 lights

I've seen several threads comparing costs for T5 vs. VHO. The T5's are more pricy to setup, because each bulb needs it's own reflector, and the bulbs are a little bit more expensive than VHO's. Most people seem to think that the T5's are a bit brighter, and many are reporting that they last...

    New Barn Kitty

It's pretty amazing that it hasn't sprayed anything...I think I'd try to chase it off with a supersoaker. The one I've got will shoot over 50ft, and it's a stream of water about the thickness of a nickel or quarter. The real cats certainly don't like it, maybe this one wouldn't either.

    Phischy's Project-3days to start

I actually ordered amphipods at one point, and set up a 10gal tank just for them. I used them to suppliment the main tanks amount of amphipods and copepods because I found a mated pair of psychedelic mandarins at a terrible LFS so I just had to 'rescue' them. I'll see if I've got a...

The pill-bug looking ones are probably amphipods, you definitely want them. They're pretty good scavengers, and mandarins, and wrasses, and some others eat em. It's unlikely that they're isopods since they usually won't survive a tank cycle without food. If you already had fish in the tank it...

    Removing the frame/brace on 10g

I wouldn't bother doing this with a 10 gal. I did cut out the center braces on my 75gal and 40 gal oceanics, because the center braces on these tanks are huge, and block light. I didn't leave it unbraced though, I went back in and put 3" strips of 3/8" glass all the way around the 75...

    Salinity Level...Why Differing Opinions?

Unless they've got a tank that's display only, that they never sell corals out of, I wouldn't trust this salinity level. Many stores run their systems at a lower salinity level because it saves them lots of money on salt, but that doesn't mean that it's good for the corals. They don't care...

Clean up crew - what is the most important critter?

Mini blueleg hermits would be my pick because they go after algae and detritus. However I don't think that any one critter will do the whole job. I've got lots of stars, snails, crabs, and shimp to help with cleanup. B

    Possible 5.5g Refugium

You can look at the ViaAqua 360 specs here. http://marinedepot.com/aquarium_powerhe ... sp?CartId= Since the ViaAqua 360 only has a max rate of 152gph I'd say it's much too low. Once you pump up to the fuge it's going to be barely a trickle. I would guess that you want closer to 300gph...

    Possible 5.5g Refugium

I'd go with a somewhat smaller than normal hose. A normal 1" overflow drains approx 600gph. This worked fine for me when I was pumping from maxi-jet 1200 horizontally about 18inches into another tank, a maxi-jet 900 wasn't enough flow to keep the overflow U-tube near full. Going up to the 5.5...

    Possible 5.5g Refugium

Like Nathan said, it should be fine. One important thing is that you either have the line pumping into the fuge right at the top of the tank, or a hole in it right at the top of the water line as a siphon break. That way if your pump fails due to a power outage it can't siphon a lot of water...

    Narkons 3 gal Eclipse journey

For that size tank/bulb I'd get a 50/50, a 10k, and an actinic, and just try different combos until you get the light you like. Since they're only $6-$10 each at hellolights I'd just experiment, and keep the odd-man-out bulb as an emergency replacement in case something burns out. B

    Possible 5.5g Refugium

How wide is the top of the cabinet? If it's wide enough I'd place the 5.5gal up top, so that you can see it as well. Fuges can be fun to look at with all the little critters in them. You can run a PH pumping the water up to the 5.5 and then just let an overflow drain it back down to the 10...

    Narkons 3 gal Eclipse journey

I don't think you can get the dusk/dawn effect if you use 50/50s. For simplicity's sake I'd just go with 2 50/50s, but if you really want that dusk/dawn effect I'd go with one actinic and one 10k. B

    Phischy's Project-3days to start

www.bigalsonline.com has aquaclear 500 HOB filters for $32.99. I just bought one with the optional overflow/skimmer attachment for $49 with shipping for my wife's 10gal. We're gonna convert it to a refuge, and replace the HOB fuge she has now, which we're having problems with. These...
