Why am I a snail murderer?

Well I'm not a coral expert but I think your fluctuating water parameters are the source of problems. The RO/DI is light on instructions but they mean to discard the first 4 gallons of usable water. After that it's all wonderful. Honestly i would just keep up with weekly water changes...

The only thing about a cheap bulb is the possibility of the spectrum not being as good as a quality bulb. No clue about live rock, I got lucky and my LFS had some interesting looking rock. Nothing on it, but it life and has been cycled quite well before I got it.

    skimmer is it working?

Well maybe another smaller pump could help control any dead spots. Just take the GPH of all your pumps and compare to your total gallons. MJ1200 = 295 GPH vs 24 gallons. 295/24 = about 12 times turn over. You wouldn't hurt anything by adding more flow. Maybe just add another maxijet with a...

Anybody using a refugium on there Aquapod 24?

I don't have this setup but I did come across this. It states that you may not need the internal part of the box and it should fit. Bit pricey, but you may be able to make your own if you are DIY inclined. http://www.lifereef.com/siphon.html

    Hawaiian sea apples

Most creatures that are nano friendly include those that eat prepared food and don't grow larger than an inch or two. So most of the larger creatures just are not ideal for nanos. There is a write up somewhere on this forum on suggestions. But remember they are suggestions. No one is telling...

Why am I a snail murderer?

Relax :D But I would remove the snails. If they are dead the ammonia may cause a problem. You can get empty shells real cheap (or just let the snails rot in another bowl of water...) Lemon juice syringed at the aptasia will make sure it's dead. And I may (just to be sure) just do a full...

    Hawaiian sea apples

I've never had a sea apple but If drty says not recommended I would definitely make sure I did my homework on what the sea apple needs and maybe try having JUST the sea apple in the tank for a while and make sure it does ok in the tank.

    2 week old 9 gallon

Well I am newer to the hobby, but it just sounds like your tank is still cycling. Turn off the lights and wait it out. I've never used a skilter but I would not run the skimmer of put any of the media in until the cycle was complete. Just my two cents.

Why am I a snail murderer?

You don't NEED them, but they do help quite a bit. You can get an algae scraper for the glass and there are hermit crabs and fish like lawnmower blennys that will keep the rock and substrate fairly clean. Try again from a different vendor if you can and just temp adjust them. If you haven't...

    LR question

sounds like limestone rock that is crap. sorry I would really press the issue with the store and even bring the remains back to them. LR isn't all that cheap. and even if it was only a couple bucks then they shouldn't fight it. Sorry again.

If you use a skimmer in the sump there could be a small problem but you won't really know until you do it. :) I am having a bubble problem but I think I know the source of the issue, my skimmer. Small sump and a really active skimmer (with poor baffling). I guess you don't REALLY need a...

    Nano Fanatic!

I use the aragonite pink fiji sand and I like it. Pretty standard stuff. Tap water is a big source of potential problems and you may want to look at alternative water sources. My preference is my own RO/DI unit. They cost about 150 for a decent one and in the long run will save tons of...

    W-mart 10g Ultimate configuration

As far as bulkhead usage they provide easy points to start putting in plumbing and give a more stable point for water to either enter or leave. You may just do fine with a maxijet 1200 for a return pump with 6 inch lift. If you have the top drilled to take water out and the bottom for the...

Yes it does. Actually I'm probably going to rip all my baffles out and just put them back in. I did have trouble due to the size of the tank and my caulk gun. 10g tank and full size caulk gun = hard to put baffles in nicely. So my sump looks wierd with HUGE beads of silicon, but heck - it's...

That may be it...dang. I only have an under then an over. Jeez. Now I have to drain that and stick in a new baffle. LOL Oh well :) Give me a chance to put in that egg crate for my optional media.

    Nano Fanatic!

What is your water source and what are you putting in the water besides your salt mix? What do you have for substrate and what is in the tank right now. Honestly if you have nothing living, I say leave it alone for a bit. It will eventually balance itself out in the end. Well except for...

    Best way to reduce phosphate?

The light would be my first thought. Most freshwater lights don't put out an ideal spectrum for plants. But most saltwater lights have a spectrum that algae loves.

Ok, so I have my overflow box installed and the sump plumbed but I am having a newbie mistake and want some different perspectives. I am using this overflox http://www.lifereef.com/siphon.html and am using a Rio 1400 for a return pump. I do have a the Cora-life super skimmer in the sump and I...
