I vote to replace with coarser sand...

I've heard those purple psoudochromis don't play well with others. Might be able to get away with 7 or so fish in your 29 gallon. But don't add them all at once....you will have to allow your live rock and sand to grow enough bacteria to support you bio load. Maybe add like 3 or 4 to start...

I'd go with chaeto, I've heard too much bad stuff about Caulpera going sexual and dumping all kinds of nutrients back into the water column.

I don't have experience with that product but if you are strapped for cash you can go to ebay and get an ro/di unit for about 100 dollars (they normally come with two sets of filters, so you can factor that into the cost of the unit). If you work out the cost this is much cheaper than any other...
