Congratulations on drilling your tank. You bring up a good point for others that may be planning on drilling a tank in the future and that is to use the same bulkhead you plan on using to trace the holes with, different brands may have different diameters.
Thanks skip. Actually the bulkheads are teh same identical brand, but i took an inaccurate measurement ant the fish store. I didnt account for the threads. But your right, you should have the bulkheads in hand and use them to trace out the circle.

reef,

Nice feeling when the little chunk of glass finally falls through, ain't it????

Looks like a beautiful job, I can see this 20 long is going to be a great project!!!

I have found it easiest to use the gasket from the bulkhead and trace around its inside perimeter to mark my holes, this also gives you a real good idea about where the edges of the bulkhead will end up.

I need you people's suggestion...What should I do about the returns? Should I add a third hole right in the middle? Should I have them hanging over the back? what do you guys think?

BTW...

BTW...looks like I'll be running a SCWD after all. I just picked one up from a member on another site for $25 shipped!! He says its only been running since Christmas.

Does anyone know what the head loss is through a SCWD? I think Ill be going with a Rio 10HF. A LFS of mine sells them for $38. THink this will work with a 4 ft head and a SCWD? It is rated at 660 gph at 0' with a max 7.5' head. Or should I go with a smaller 8HF with a flow rate of 550 gph at 0' with a max head of 6.5'? I's shooting for around 200 to 250 gph through my fuge.

Well, today I made the holes large enough to fit the bulkheads. yahyaa on that.

Look like im just gonna use the two 1"ers as external dursos and have two 1/2" (maybe 3/4") return lines that hang over the back. I am looking at the Rio 8HF or the Mag5...what do you think about these two?

dont really know anything about the rio, but i did have the mag5 and it worked great. hardly created any heat or noise, very good choice. now that i think of it i had it on my 20L. now its on my buddies 75.HTH

Not much to update...just been doing a ton of research...I want to do this tank the right way.

One update. I made the holes slightly to properly fit the 2 1" bulkheads.

Second update. I bought a SCWD that should arrive in a couple of days. I created a partial CLM (closed loop manifold) that will be attached to the SCWD.

I will have around 700gph making it to the tank..So there will be 4 effuents (tees), with the SCWD directing water to two at a time every 3 seconds or so. So around 350 gph per opening in the closed loop. This will hopefully produce a nice random wave-like current in the tank.

I am still not sure as to which water pump will be powering all this. I began looking into the Rio 17HF but I have heard nothing but bad coments about the Rios. I like them because this particular pump uses only 45 watts...the comparable Mag 9.5 use a wopping 95 watts! But the Mag produces the exact gph that I am looking for, seems extremely reliable, is very popular so it is easy to find parts if need be. It is just the electrical consumption along with the price tag. I think I will just suck it up and buy it with my bonus next week.

Jesse,

I will tell you a little about Mags... I own three; Mag 250 for my skimmer, Mag 700 for water changes, Mag 1200 my return pump.

All three pumps are extremely powerful against head pressure; they get voted even stronger than Eheim against head pressure.

However, to all this glory is a downfall, they great a ton of heat just like you have researched. And becuase of this heat I was forced into my chiller.

Not to mention I have three 1200 maxijets that produce 20 watts of heat each....

My electrical bill for December was 74 dollars and in January it went up to 91 dollars but then again Dragon was visiting me and used up a lot of electricity, hehehe well that is what I told my wife....

Jesse,
Here are two pics of the pumps, so you can see they are big....

Mike,

The other pump I'm looking at is the QuietOne 4000. I have heard alot of good stuff about them, and those who have had problems with them got great support from the manufacture. It only consumes 50 watts, has a 10.5 ft max head, and at 4 ft head produces around 775 gph. Push that through the SCWD and Im left with about 700 gph...right what I am aiming for.

Well I went ahead and ordered the PentAir QuietOne 4000 tonight from bigalsonline.com...they are offering free shipping for the next day or two on orders over $50, so I got the pump for like $56 shipped...not bad. So now all that is left is plumbing and moving the contents of the existing 16g over to the 20L.

I am beginning to contemplate the livestock and I think I am looking into a zoanthus-dominant tank along with LPS and DEFINITELY a clam or two...probably one of these ultra grade corceas with the tan and blue...

I saw this one in person over the weekend and this picture does it NO justice.

Fish-wise, i am planning on a true percula, a sixline wrasse and possible a goby/shrimp pair.

I want this tank to be an eye-catcher, so I am planning on a black background along with a sandbed that is predominantly black sand mixed with white sand...so ~90% black and 10% white sand. I like the black sand but dont like the detritus that shows up like a sore thumb...so hopefully this will help to cover that up. I am going to a LFS that sells the sand loose, so I will go and mix a small amount and see exactly what it looks like.

definitely more posts soon to come.

This is going to be a great tank....... :D

Give some thought to the mixed color sand bed.....depending on the mix....I have seen them just look like the tank is dirty all the time......

I will hopefully have it up and running in 2 weeks.

Imm gonna look into the yasha hashi gobies...we'll see.

This is the tank that I would have set up 2 1/2 years ago had i had the patience...I think we all know how that is in the beggining. Although, alot of the knowledge Ive gained from this site and others is going into this tank as well.

thanks for all the compliments!!

I looked into the yasha hase goby and, like most gobies, they are prone to jumping....this wont work out with an open top. So I am looking at maybe a black clown/true percula combo (would this work?) and a six line or some other colorful fish.
