Gary,

Thanks I thought it might be that bendable plywood that I have seen but I know that can be pretty pricy and I dont know if it would be strong enough to support mounting a light to.

Nah, just cheap stuff. I didn't spend a great deal of money on this set up. It is lightweight and fairly sturdy. You might have to build some kind of bracing underneath to support the lights. But, it's do-able.

Day 6 at Pirate's Reef -

With the tank being set up from the start using cured live rock and sand, the tank has never shown any elevations of amonia or nitrites. Several small soft coral frags were added on day 4 and all are doing well. Tank parameters are stable - temp has not gone over 79 (usually hovers between 76.5 & 78.0), which is a huge relief. Starting to see some movement in the sand bed fauna. We are on our way!

One of the rocks I put in here has some neat macro algae on it. I was told that this is actually a form of coralline. Don't know though, I have never seen any exactly like this. Anyone ever have any like this or know for sure what it is?

A friend of mine brought me a few coralline covered rocks, live sand and a few frags for the tank. So, I have two different sources for diversity to the sand bed now. One from the rock tub at the LFS and the other from a coral proagation system that my friend has. It's 16 feet long and is loaded with all sorts of stuff. My first zoos are pink, so that's a good start. :)

Very nice indeed! BTW I'm not sure why but your avatar is not coming up...maybe the link went bad?
Thanks Tim. I think that is my fault. I apparently deleted the avatar from my web space while doing some cleaing up. I'll have to fix that when I get time. I HAVE to go on an overnight fishing trip today. :)

New fans finally came in. 3.15" 115v 5 watt, 1600 RPM 16dB Orion ball bearing fans. These babies are not exactly small, but they are quiet!

Since the canopy is almost complety enclosed, I am using one fan blowing in and on the other end, one blowing out. This doesn't work that well in canopies with open backs, but hopefully I will get a good flow of air through the enclosure.

Went to the LFS today to buy a cleaning crew. Some nassarius snails, banded trochus (man those guys move fast) and some ceriths. Also picked up some scarlett hermits. I couldn't resist this zooanthid rock. I thought it was a steal at $35. Not all of the polyps are open yet, but not bad for a couple of hours in a new tank.

Dude, great zoas! $35 is a great price. That canopy looks awesome, BTW. Where did you get those fans?

Jesse
Thanks. The LFS said those zoos had been there for a couple of weeks and no one really liked them. What? Must be a bunch of color blind people going in there.

I got the fans on-line from Arcade Electronics. They have a ton of different fans and you can order them in different versions to suit your needs. This particular fan is a 3.15" 1600rpm. Doesn't move as much air as the 3000rpm, but I was going for a quiet fan that moved an adequate amount of air through the canopy, which this one does for my set up. The 1600rpm fans move 17cfm of air at 18dB and is only 5 watts. The 3000rpm fan moves 31cfm at 29dB and is 12 wattts.

wow...nice. I really am impressed with this project. If the one fan blowing in and the one fan blowing out doesn't work try putting both fans on one side and have them blow out, I know it sounds wierd but so long as there are some slits on the other side this works fairly well for the setup you have. (some of the military equipment I worked on had the exact same setup as your canopy and stayed fairly cool in the desert...)

So far the "push - pull" set up seems to be working fine. I have been told that this won't work well if the canopy is open in the back. Mine has a very small opening in the back, less than an inch. Looks like it is not affecting the flow that much, if at all.

I ordered some "authentic" chest hardware (handles) that came in yesterday and I installed them last night. Looks a little more like a chest now. Maybe now I can take it with me when I travel. :)
