Lights for 2.5 gallon

I was thinking about trying what Geoff did, and cutting some stuff up and making it all in one. I have been watching som stuff on you tube to try to make the best tank I can, but it looks like I might need to do a double tank. so Tim or Geoff, or any one for that matter, what do you think will be best for the 10 Gal, a sump, or refugium? as for hiding the other tank with a stand, I will most likely build one, it won't cost too much. so, just so we are clear, if I build a 3 chamber sump, do I need a protien skimmer? I really don't want to put all that money into it, seeing as how I will be getting a really good light for this thing?

Need a skimmer? Not really. Will any tank benefit from a skimmer, I think so. Geoff doesn't use them (I believe) and his tanks a gorgeous. I would design you sump to be able to have a refugium just in case you want to add one later. If you can catch him Tswifty is one of the best sump designers I've seen.

This is the one I had on my 90g tank. It's a 30 gallon with three partitions.

In use (I had it from left to right, skimmer area--->Return section<-------Refugium section)
The arrows show water flow, But some people just do (skimmer--->refugium------>return):

I put my heaters and such in the *skimmer* area (or just empty first area). So something you could do is just put all your equipment to area 1, a bunch or rocks in area two, and then have you return pump in section 3. Just a thought.

hey tim, I really like the way you did your sump. all the sumps I have been looking at online, are not built like that. the way you told me to build mine is the only way I have seen. so now when you say all my equiptment in compartment one, what equiptment are you talking about? all I thought I needed was a pump in there, and I was going to put some Bio balls as well, not sure if they would be needed or if that was going to be the right compartment for it though, let me know what you think.

I wouldn't use bio balls, I would go to a LFS and buy the cheapest liver rock rubble I could find (in my area 1.99 a pound for the rubble). For the equipment I mean heaters, protien skimmers, media reactors, UV sterilizers, and so on. Even if you don't initially plan on using any reactors or skimmers I would still design the sump as above for upgrades. As far as the *right compartment you could literally fill the entire thing with live rock if you wanted!

Oh and by the way for the return pump I would remove any sponges so that pods can be shot up into the display tank. :cool1:

hey guys, well I went looking online for a pump for my sump, I typped in water pupm fish tank in google, and all that came up was air pump. so I am smart enough to know that you need some kind of water pump, but not sure where to find one, so can any one help me on this.

well for a minute there, I thought I lost all of it, it was all looking real gloomy, then with a few water changes, and some close monitoring, they all came back to life, even my anthelia started growing again, I'm not sure what keeps eating at it, but I will need to find it soon if I want this stuff to grow. so I had a quesion just above my pictures, can any one answer that?
