So how much did you pay for your pair of clowns, where I am from I can expect to pay in the neighbourhood off 300.00 which for me a natorious penny pincher seems a little steep, although id love to have them.....anyways they look really good, I bet you cant wait till they begin to change their color......good luck :stonight

They are not a mated pair, so I paid $35 each which is pretty cheap. Usually in my area they are around $45 to $50 each. These are indeed a breed of clowns that do go up in price as they age, especially if they do mate. However you can get them for much cheaper than that $300 price tag that you mention...even online.

The prices seem right, atlest much better then my lfs, but I have always been a little hesatent about purchasing live stock online, alot of the time the online companys are based out of the United States and living in Canada I can always expect longer shipping times, plus customs, like when I order stuff off ebay it always takes a couple of days longer, and I would hate to open a box full of dead fish, evan though most companys have a return ploicy for things like that but it just seems like alotta extra work. If there are people out there who constantly order livestock online and maybe have a few tricks of the trade, on safe ording Id love to hear them beacuse it seems like I might be getting ripped off by my lfs.......

thanks :stonight

Just some updates:

My nitrates went up to 15 ppm after adding the clowns, but has now dropped back donw under 10 ppm. Nitrates and ammonia have remained at 0 since the beginning. pH is pretty stable at right around 8.0...temp VERY stable at 81.0-81.5, never varying more than that. The specific gravity is also very stable at 1.023.

The most surprising thing for me though so far as been the complete lack of algae. I have no growth on the glass, sand, or rocks.

Also, since I have the overflows, the surface of the water is crystal clear.

Overall, having the dual overflows along with the refugium has added a huge amount of stability compared to my previous 16 gallon which didn't have any of this.

My fishies are extremely happy...there is a little bit of bickering and some demonstrations of dominance between them, but no physical damage has been done to either of them. They have readily eaten since they were first introduced into the tank.

All the corals seem very happy, except the open brain which has yet to recede, but hasnt gotten any better either.

I think that is it for now...I will continue to keep this thread updated as best I can.

Jesse,

Those indeed are a beautiful pair of black variants. Stevens black variants have become really black with vibrant white stripes.

I hope to see that hint of blue in the future, that was cool.

I never thought I'd become attached to his fish but they are indeed my favorite for their exotic colors and personality.

They are super hardy Jesse, at least his are, I am going through a major ich epidemic in my tank and Stevens fish have remained immune to the ich, not one dot at all on their entire body.

He really took care of these two fish like babies.

I think his are mated pair but not sure, he said they were when he paid for them. He also said they got into a major fight in his 6 gallon cube until dominance was created.

Now occasionally the female will rush the male and he will dance around in small jolts and then they swim together again, thats it.

I tried to get them the anemone and failed; first my LFS sold me the wrong one and then if you have any nitrates in your tank, it will die.

I had 25 ppm and brought them down to 10 ppm, I couldn't go lower and I have a real strong feeling it was the nitrate that took out the Haddoni carpet which by the way is the wrong match for black variants.

YEAH clowns are super hardy same here mike ...when having problems with ick the clown will be clear of ick while only affected are the 2 small gobies and the firefish.

I also wanted to share some info that I think might be useful for those of you with refugiums. I came across this light at Wal-Mart (there is already some salt creap collecting on mine).....

It is a screw-in self ballasted compact fluorescent light...Lights of America brand.

Here is the best part...not only is it 30 watts, it is 6,500k...perfect for macros...the only thing better than that is it is $8.50!!

Combine that with a $5 clamp-on reflector, and you have a 30 watt 6,500k refugium light.

Also thought that I would share my next mod for my tank...I will be adding these Loc-Line outlets in place of the homade outlets in the front two effluents in my manifold. Man this stuff is expensive!

Not sure which length I am goin to use yet.

i have 3/4" pvc...not a power head. thats the main reason.
I also have the alternating current.

And actually, the clowns are less than 1" each...yes, they look teeny in my 30" long tank. I have to say that once you put these into your tank, there is nothing boring about them. they have a fantastic personality, and the black/white is a great contrast against all the colors from the corals and rock

At a LFS...they had better prices than anybody...even online prices. Still, what you see there cost me $30. But I have a couple extra pieces that i am going to take back for credit.
