Erik,

Thanks,
With such a small volume to work with you can't flood your tank with corals, then you won't have fun in the long run...

I have all the time in the world, two awesome tanks with hardly nothing in them and all the time in the world as these tanks are cycled...

I will be adding in the Yumas next and a Ric...

More to come reefers, this is just a appetizer... hehehe

Update,

So I noticed that I finally started growing unwanted algae on my premium rock and brown diatoms on one side of my tank. This was to be expected since my lighting period kicked in.

The tank had cycled for about 3 weeks with no lights and now the lights had brought in the algae.

I was at first perplexed when I went from crystal clear water to a cloudy almost hazing type of look.

At first I brought out my HOT magnum and started cleaning the water but noticed that I got a slight improvement and then the next day it was the same.

Next thing I do is a 90 percent water change and get crystal clear water for one day; then the next day it's almost the same as before. I was like okay, what is going on.

I run down to the LFS and purchase 5 small blue/grey hermits and drop them in. They start to go to town on some of the rocks. The next day I purchase 4 red hermits and they really go on the ugly algae.

I want and need 4 nassirus snails but my LFS was out; I also confirmed with them is this common for my tank to go from crystal clear to slighty cloudy, he asked when I had added my lights and after I told him, he said, I'm getting spores of algae to breed and the filter cannot catch all of it.

He said within 2 to 2 weeks it should go back to crystal clear. I thought I would share this experience as it's never happened to me before.

Just my 2 cents....

Reefermike,

Thanks for the comments on my tanks; I pride myself in my care and maintenance on my tanks.

I find it really hard to get both tanks up and running since I moved. If you didn't know, I lost so much corals and fish on my move easily $500 dollars in just a blink of the eye.

As I got the 72 up and running courtesy of my younger brother flying up and helping me, I would've still stalled and killed more corals and fish.

After the 72 was up and going I still had the 6 gallon hanging around the garage and since I downgraded the light, I asked my wife if I could set it up since it would be just small gobies and shrooms. She gave me the green light and well there it is so far.

I just cannot fill both of these tanks in a blink of an eye because it cost so much money and we are on a budget with the new home; so I have to be patient.

If you look at my tanks in the past including when I just owned the 72 my specimens were incredible and my tank was blooming, now it's a different story and time will be my allie.

With time being on my side and having to be patient, I want to save my money and get really nice corals and this time I've decided to branch into a different theme for my 72 gallon more LPS than SPS.

I fell in love with the new look of a new lfs that surfaced up in the last month. He had nothing but gorgeous LPS all over his 140 gallon show tank, it was a site to see very different.

Anyway my advice take it slow with your tanks if you have the patience you will love what you will create in the future as opposed to those reefers that stock there tanks so fast they see themselves selling some corals at a loss to get a new coral.

Or they run out of real estate and cannot figure out why they didn't wait, how do I know this? I was one of those reefers many many years ago.

hey Mike,

The tank looks great! I've got the same style of tank with the coralife 2x18W unit. Its a zoanthid/ricordea tank. I was thinking about upgrading to the coralife 150w HQI hang on and was wondering how you fared with it the first time around in setting up this tank. How come you decided to go with less lighting? Was it overkill? I'm just wondering as I'm not getting the colors from my zoos that I had hoped for and was offered a great deal on the halide setup.

TIA,
Christy :)

Putting a 150 watt MH on a 6g zoa/ric tank would be WAY overkill. I think you will fare much better with the pc's. A 20,000k MH would be a good choice... I had a 150 watt MH on a 12" deep tank and my zoas didnt color up as expected and I was running the 14,000k phoenx... a very blue lamp.

Hard to believe that they would flake on such a good deal. I'd take you up on that deal but I've already started on my 3 gallon project. Sadly, I've already spent more than $200.
