It depends on what the corals were used to before they went into your tank. If they were under 150 watters or higher in the previous tank, then they should be good. If the lighting was less than that of your tank, start them out lower and move them up over a couple week period. HTH, Jesse

I wouldnt put cheato into a skimmer. I too run the Bakpak...take out the bio-bale for sure. If you want to run cheato, adda fuge above/below the tank, or run a modded HOB filter if it'll fit on your tank. Jesse

I have never used purple up but if you keep a correct level of Ca, with time you will probably have more coraline that you know what to do with. I also second the Cyclopeeze... if you get the frozen bar form, there is no water in it so it doesnt get freezer-burned and lasts forever. I too...

The lighting sounds good, The filtration is cheasy and there is now ablilty to run a skimmer. The tank is just SO narrow.... seems awkward. Jesse

IMO, the most flow you can have without upsetting your inhabitants (i.e. direct flow, etc.), the better. Manifolds and closed loops are great ways of doing this. A strong, indirect flow is best... powerheads tend to direct a large flow in a small area. Seio makes powerheads with high flow and...

Welcome, bobajum. I too am local... Costa Mesa. I like Tongs for certain things, but my recent favorite is a store down here called Coral Oasis. Great selection of some rarer stuff for unbeatable prices... I got my recent T. Crocea clam from them for $40... Jesse

I would MH on both honestly... for the frag tank it will give you superior growth. For the 44g it is necessary for a 24" tal tank if you want corals...no other lighting will be able to penetrate down to the bottom, plus it is hard to fit any other type of lighting that is nearly as powerful...

If you two used paypal, you can probably get your money back... I would do something about that... Jesse

Thanks for the comments... the most important thing to consider before you add clams to any system is first of lighting (of course), secondly a VERY stable system with very small fluctuations in temp, salinity, pH/Alk, etc. As far as lighting goes, IMO minimum of 150 watt MH's on a tank 12"-16"...
