Oh...And I wasn't trying to imply that your tank wasn't doing just fine with that many fish in it....I'm pretty much known for overfiltering and adding more fish than is normally recommended, so I was just curious is all. B

    whats going on?

Is the 5g gas can plastic or metal? Metal is a no-no of course. I've got several plastic gas cans, and some of them have a metal screen/filter either on the nozzel, or in the area the nozzel connects to the can. Flatworm exit could still be a factor. I didn't notice any responses an my...

    Lighting/Hood Help

Different bulbs are not interchangeable with the same fixture. If you want to keep corals in a nano. You basically have 3 choices when it comes to light. PC - Power Compact Fluorescent. These are small high-output fluroescent lamps. T5 - Another type of small fluorescent, you...

    whats going on?

If I were ONLY doing nano tanks I wouldn't mess with an RO/DI unit except one of the disposable ones that you can buy and hook up to your sink for emergencies. I wouldn't buy salt and mess with making my own saltwater. I'd just buy RO/DI top-off water and Saltwater at the same time from the...

    Newbie...quick filter question

Filter floss goes on the side next to the pump. There's an acrylic baffle, and the main fuge area with sand, miracle mud, liverock rubble, and macro algae. She's also got a piccolo skimmer in the side with the pump. B

    Lighting/Hood Help

The easiest way to determine the lights you want is by looking at all the corals at the LFS, or the online vendors, and determine which ones you like. Then you can figure out what they're lighting needs are, and plan your setup. Unless you know what type of corals you want to keep, there's no...

    whats going on?

RO/DI water at the LFS runs about $1 a bottle. Same goes for Salt. You don't save much by buying any of the bottles in the grocery store. So why mess with it? The machines are obviously cheaper...Usually about .25, but folks have gotten burned when the filters weren't changed frequently...

    Sea Horses

They're actually pretty well suited for nanos, assuming that you can either get one that already eats frozen or have a lot of time on your hands to deal with their feeding needs.... Your best bet is an ORA tank-raised seahorse...They run about $50-$80 I'd do a couple months worth of...

My new and first nanoreef tank

I'd skip the starfish. Most of them either get too big for that size tank, or are delicate enough that you're unlikely to be able to keep them in there. I'm only talking about the types that you can typically purchase in a LFS. There are also micro or mini stars that folks have in their...

    Lighting/Hood Help

You can generally buy wooden hoods for a 10g at petco, petsmart, heck probably even walmart. Unless you put glass or acrylic over the top of the tank it's not going to slow your evap rates much though, and the glass/acrylic will block a good percentage of the light. B

    Newbie...quick filter question

Flow is more important for the tank than the filter. However there is a certain amount of flow that has to happen through the filter as well. The surface skimmer attachment cuts down the flow drastically. My wife wanted the AC 300 to use as a fuge, but with the surface skimmer attachment on...

    whats going on?

You say your test kit sucks? If you don't have any faith in it, I'd take a cup of tank water over to Global and have them run the full set of tests. Salinity, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, calcium, ph, phosphates. When I used flatworm exit, I definitely saw an immediate reaction from most of...

    whats going on?

Yes you can drink RO, DI, or distilled water. However you and your fishtanks are two seperate issues. Just cause you can drink it, (and it's not necessarily good for you), doesn't mean that your tanks can handle it as well as your body can. Long term (6mo-yr or more), of entirely RO water...

    Newbie...quick filter question

My wife's got the AC500 with the surface skimmer attachment on her 10g as a refugium. Once you add the surface skimmer attachment you reduce your flow quite a bit, you might want to go bigger than the 150, especially if you're going to do a 20g. You don't really need to do anything special for...

    whats going on?

Ok so the new water can probably be ruled out. What's your salinity? What's your PH? What salt brand were you using and what did you switch too? How old are your lights? Have you changed your lights? What's the temp on the tank? Is it higher or lower than a month ago? Did you put...

    whats going on?

No. Arrowhead spring water is not RO water unless it specifically states on the bottle that it has been run though a reverse osmosis filtering process. Spring water is just spring water. Just the same as you'd drink out of a creek in the mountains. Period. It tends to taste a bit better...
