    opinions wanted on protein skimmers

Here is a real cheap diagram. Basically it's three baffles of material (glass, plastic, acrylic, whatever. They are all one inch apart from each other with a pattern forcing the water 1. over 2. under 3.over. The second baffle is 1.5 inches from the bottom. Like this (REALLY bad picture...

Wanting to start a 13gal (50 litre) nano...

For biological filtration all you need is live rock and live sand (although some go barebottom, so you don't NEED but it does help). For saltwater the option in my opinion is the rock and sand. BUT, external filters can be useful - especially since your tank doesn't have an overflow. You...

    12 gallon jbj nano

Up to you. There shouldn't be any earth shattering negatives to having the three as opposed to two. I only caution as you will want a more mature tank to handle the biological load for a tank with multiple inhabitants. (I am notorious for under-stocking by others comparisons, I just prefer...

    12 gallon jbj nano

Well I don't know about compatibility of those fish but that would be the most I'd put in that tank. I personally would start with the two clown gobies and then work from there.

    ..rattling sound..?

Well there are lights and salt water involved so do be careful. The best statement I can say that is if nothing malfunctioning then there is no concern. Sounds like *maybe* you would want to check the setup to see if any water was thrown inside the hood. For the rattle I would suggest try...

Help!! What is wrong with my polyps?

Yep. Soap will do that. :cool1: I have used the same child locks that exist for refrigerators with success. But my tank is a nano cube that has a hinged lid... It wasn't pretty, but it did the job. Also just to make sure, if you are adding water to make up for evaporation (topping off) -...

    G'day from Sydney, Australia

Definitely good luck! Some one here posted a rather nice thread on a cheap 10 gallon setup. I'm sure you can get a beautiful setup for little start up.

LOL I'm sorry. It's the MSX not MX. Marine solutions. I've also used the coralife super skimmer 65. It's a cheap skimmer, BUT it does an admirable job. If you can pick one of those up used (less than $50) then I'd call that a steal. That MSX 160 is over kill on my 90 gallon with a 30 gallon...

    Funkngroovy's 22g with sump.

I'm down with sumps! It's just sometimes hard for a nano tank enthusiast to get the proper hardware setup due to space and hassle. Love that setup, but can you post some pictures of the sump too? I especially like those duncans! Oh yeah I don't know if I've told you, but :welcome to...

    The 6 Gallon

I looks like the one in the middle left is the skeleton of a bubble coral? Hard to be sure but that's what it looks like to me.

You're welcome. There are nitrate sponges out there, I just haven't used any of them. If it gets too bad that may help in the short term to prevent fish death.

I don't know much of those two. I have an mx-160 and it is quite an excellent skimmer. I have it on my 90 and I love it.

They are good questions. I have T5 lights, not THOSE light specifically - but comparable. And I have clams, SPS, LPS, and so on. I may have to put higher demanding items midway or higher, but I can keep anything happy with them. I don't have a splash guard, but my bulbs are about 5 inches...

    help needed

I would immediately do some water changes to reduce the nitrate. Live rock and sand will *help* keep the nitrate build up down. Mechanical filtration can help some too (sponges that are clean frequently or skimmers). But honestly two clown fish may be too much for such a young tank. Your...

Help!! What is wrong with my polyps?

Yep - tap water, even if clean, is HORRIBLE for salt water tanks. I don't know of any tap water that is ideal for saltwater fish tanks. I personally would up my salinity to 1.026, and consider upgrading the lights. I assume that is compact florescent lighting? You may want to consider...

If you go compact florescent I would put as much as I can get in there. Try looking up T5 with individual reflectors. This a cheaper version of what I'm talking about: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... atid=16770
