noob starting a 5 gal nano

For using natural sea water I will hope Geoff will chime in as he (and seemingly a LOT of Australian reefers) using natural sea water. There is a trick to the collection if I am not mistaken. For a 5 gallon tank I don't think two fish, let alone clowns, would do well (those are small clowns...

3 week old 2.5 gallon pico, coming together

that is a mighty fine pico! Don't compare two paintings and say which is better, just appreciate them both for what they are. :cool1:

Hi from a newbie, planning my nano

The power head and rock approach is a more *pure* approach and works just fine. Less things to clean and maintain. Mechanical filtration is pretty common in tanks to help clean up excess detritus in the water column. The thing we have to watch out for is when all that detritus is in the...

    Lights for 2.5 gallon

:) Do a water change the night prior and have a bottle of fresh top off water for her to just add to the tank (a wax marker on the outside of the tank does nicely for showing how much water to use) while you are gone. Wait until you get back to add anything else. (Clown gobies are small and...

D-D JBJ 28 gal Nano Cube - Toothadash

Nice! For the ROWA make sure it's a gently bubble over. If it's too rough then the media can be pulverized and the dust can wreck havok on corals. GREAT coralline growth on those rocks.

    Finally put my tank together...

I think rics are tougher than nails! Soft corals (like leathers) are great and pretty resistant, but some have had issues combining any stoney corals with softies. (not everyone)

    A PICO!

Nice! I love it when people build their own tanks. It shows how easy a pico can be made! How long did it take?

    Lights for 2.5 gallon

I was laid out with strep and two sinus infections (my son had scarlet fever!). Glad to see some pictures! Water changes like Geoff said should help your tank. Twice a week would great, but you might be ok with one a week.

    Lfs Water Readings?

If you are testing the water in the bags of your critters *maybe* the critter is fouling up the water? I am trying to play devil advocate as I'm pretty sure a LFS wouldn't keep many things alive with that reading.

    First water change?

^+1 The cycle needs the ammonia and nitrite so the bacteria have something to feed on. If we do water changes we then reduce them and possibly prolong the time until the live rock has a balanced level of bacteria. There is more than one way to peel an orange. This is my way. :lol...

    flow issues and more!

Ouch indeed. My 12 gallon has pretty much a maxijet 600 for the pump. I will be adding another small pump in the display to help create a more *random* flow by aiming the streams at each other.

Hi from a newbie, planning my nano

:welcome to Nanotank.com! Seems Geoff has you off to a great start! My thoughts though are for 50-60 liters I don't think I would any more than just the two clowns. (Mine were pigs and I don't know if the tank will handle the third fish in the beginning) Once your tank is more established...

Coralreefdiver was selling her nano in the for sale forum a bit ago. I'm not sure if it is still for sale though.
