    Salinity / Specific Gravity

Temperature will only affect your reading if your measuring device doesn't auto compensate for temperature. Most newer refractometers have an auto-compensate feature and will not be subject to temperature changes within a certain range. You need to increase your salinity to around...

    29g Trogdor's Paradise

I have since added a cleanup crew and one pulsing xenia Cleanup Crew: 6 Astraea 6 Cerith 4 Hermit Crabs 10 Nassarius 1 Xenia frag Everything is going pretty good. I have a bit of cyano and a small algae bloom that I'm trying to control. I can't seem to get the nitrates down (15ppm)...

Convert 55g or start new nanotank? sw newbie

IMO, it would be best to use RO water but it isn't necessary. I would plan on eventually moving towards it though. I would call your water company and they should have the most updated water test available (mine is via a website). Check it and see what they are adding to the water. I use...

Matte or Gloss paint on back glass?

My opinion, if you don't know what color you want to make it (or think that you may change your mind later) then go with the colored paper. I did that with mine and haven't had any regret. I purchased the solid black with a reverse side being blue.

    JBJ Digi-Lab....

I voted no as well. Make sure you calibrate the floaters (or atleast know how far off yours might be) . Mine was reading 1.024 and with a refractometer it was 1.033...just a heads up because I was a floater supporter too.

IMO, the skimmer can wait until you get a bioload (ie fish)

    WATER CHANGE

Adding water-change water back in shouldn't be a big issue if you add it fast since the salinity should be the same. With top-off water, I try to pour it in a high flow area to distribute the water quicker.

    Live Rock, Sludge and Worms?

Be sure that you have adequate water flow in your tank. If it gets too bad follow skipm's advice and maybe even add a mechanical filter with some carbon.

Please Help With Clean Up Crew!

The 5 hermit crabs seem to be overkill crab wise. They have the potential to grow and kill off most of your snails for their shells. I would limit a 12g to about 1 or 2 hermits. Astraea's are a great addition and should work rather well, the same for the ceriths. The star will more than...

Pet Store Receives a Shipment of Tattooed Fish

Check out CNN.com. There's a video (sorry I can't link it due to it being Javascripted) about a fish store that, hopefully it was a mistake, received a shipment of fish that were tattooed in Singapore. Can you imagine the stress that will cause?

rics appear to be getting smaller

Can you give us some more insight into what your parameters are. Maybe low to the test kit might be too high for the ricordias. I'm assuming that you are using Power Compact lighting so you should be fine for lights. Are you using a refractometer or a swing arm hydrometer?

How and how long to cure LR?

Curing base rock doesn't have to take months. If you are just wanting it cured enough where you aren't getting any readable levels off of it, then it wouldn't take much longer than cycling your tank. In fact, I just did this on my 29g that I setup. I used about 8lbs of rock from my old tank...

Appropiate fish for a 29 Tank.

Remember he already has 2 Damsels so a total of 5 would be the absolute max that I would put in a 29g. The link that Jesse posted should be a sticky on every marine hobby website.

What is the best fish for eliminating algae?

Here's what I would do. Fill up 2 buckets 2-3 gallons each, depending on your rock's size. Match your tank's temp and salinity. Put the rock to scrub in the first bucket and scrub the algae off while trying to avoid the zoas as much as possible. Pull the algae off around the zoas with your...
