Rip,
I am going to tell you a short story, about when I had my son. I was about the same as you and all excited and just so happy. This old timer was checking out my son and says to me, " enjoy him and when he turns 13 take him down to the lake and drownd him." Well to say the least, I was appalled and in shock, that he would even say such a thing. Was funny because I thought about it from time to time and would just go on about raising my son.
Well thirteen came and then fourteen came and I started to realize just what he was talking about. By sixteen, I had wished I had listened to him. Somehow I survived to 18 and my son was off to college. I thought, man this kid went off into space around 13 and is off to school at 18, I wonder when he will come back to earth?
Each year of college passed and it seemed old dad was getting smarter and smarter each year. My son was asking real questions and even wanted to sit and talk! Now 2 years later he is married and doing well as a mortgage banker and calls every day and is always wondering when dad and mom are going to come and visit.
It seems like yesterday that I was holding him at the hospital, I blinked my eyes and here I sit. Enjoy every min. you can with the family and think of the old man, when your son hits 13. Then think of me when he hits 18 and comes back to earth!!!
