Maroon Clown

Apparantly they are a bit aggressive to other clown fish and their own kind unless they are a pair. I have never had this fish, but now that I see it I just may get one! :)

The Maroon Clownfish, also known as the Spine-Cheeked Anemonefish or Maroon Anemonefish, has a bold, red body color with a broad white stripe on the forehead, and white stripes on its midsection and in front of the rear fin.

A 30 gallon or larger aquarium is desirable as is a host anemone such as Bubbletip Sea Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor). It is aggressive towards other clownfish, and they are difficult to maintain together in the same aquarium.

The Maroon Clownfish diet consists of meaty items such as frozen shrimp and herbivore preparations.

Do not move the Maroon Clownfish with a net as its cheekspines will become entangled. Use a specimen container if capture is necessary. It is difficult to maintain more than one maroon clown in the aqurium unless they are a pair. These fish like to fight among themselves.

I had one. They are the most aggressive of clown fish. He was beating up on my tomato which I expected and my damsels which I didn't. I couldn't put my hand in the tank. He was vicious and I've heard countless stories like mine. Don't get one unless you can keep it by itself or get a pair. Seriously. Ask jesse(Reefman23) He had one as well.

Also they are the largest of clowns and don't really belong in Nano's. I love them as well they're beautiful fish, but I can't stand them at the same time. I cringe everytime I see one at the LFS now.

why do you want to mix clowns just out of curiosity? Every thing I know and understand is that you don't want to keep clowns of any type together unless they are a paired couple. I've never seen anyone keep two different types of clowns together successfully. Not that I've seen every tank or talked to every person out there. Clowns are very possessive of their homes. They don't like sharing space. territorial fish you know? You can try it however I've been there and it didn't work out very well.

Yeah it is generally a bad idea to put more than one clown in a tank unless they are a mated pair... especially in a nano. Like Cris said, super agressive. I had one with a rose bubble tip anemone and that thing wouldnt let me near the anemone without taking a shot at my hand. They are beautiful (especially the gold stripes) and if you plan your tank right they are great fish. HOw big is your tank?

They are just asking. LOL no need to be embarassed. :cool1:
Yeah I'm just curious. for me I already had a tomato clown and fell in love with the gold stripe maroon and had to have it. That was my down fall. But you just seem to want to have an assortment of clowns. I'm just wondering what's driving you to want more than 1 clown. you could always set up a few different tanks all side by side with the different clowns that you love.

There are no dumb questions here at Nanotank.com. a year and a half ago I was in your place asking all the questions. It's how we grow my friend.

BTW, how many times do you feed your fish per day? Seems that they have lots of offload after feeding, which is bad for my tank though..my ammonia level starting to spike again, well need to change water again this sunday.

I feed once a day ... even for my 90 gallon tank. Some people feed twice (but smaller portions). Portion size is key, if they don't finish all the food in like 3-5 minutes then there is too much food being added.

Really? LOL, my clown must think I am a jerk! I only feed every couple of days and once in a while he might go close to a week without being fed.

Just a warning about fish, especially clowns. They will ALWAYS appear hungry. They'll come swimming up to the surface and an beg and try to get you to feed them... DONT FALL FOR IT! :lol3: My clown suckers me in from time to time still.

Remember to offer a mixed diet too. One type of flake food isnt really enough. You can offer mysis, veggies, etc and mix it up a bit.

LOL I have a mandarin that eats prepared foods (two mandarins actually, and both eat prepared foods). And a couple dartfish, plus a Kole tang that just may leave the tank and slap me if I don't feed it once daily.

Definitely mix up the food. I love Rods food (I use the vegi mix for my kole). One day I feed mysis, another I feed cyclopeeze, brine shrimp (i know it's basically popcorn), phyto, and garlic, and on another day I feed the Rods food.

It makes sense in my head.

I got scolded from the owner of window to the sea when I told him I only feed once every couple of days. He gave me a big lecture about how fish eat up to 7 times a day in their natural habitat.... blah blah blah. So I started feeding once a day. He said he was going to turn me in for animal abuse. He feeds his tanks at home 3 times a day. Anyway I'm not sure if you're aware, but he shut down his store and opened a store inside the car wash off Redhill and the 5. He's focusing on setting up a highend custom build shop. Said he was sick of having to sell a million nemos just to pay the rent. He also said he was giving his customers passes to go up to his wholesalers in LA to get their livestock.

Wow. If you step back far enough one could think taking a fish out of the ocean and putting them in a tiny glass box (no matter how big you think your tank is, it's A LOT smaller than an ocean) is kind of mean. I have a refuge and I "feed" phytoplankton in my tank to keep natural food plentiful for the daily "grazing".

How is it coming catkchun? Do you have any pictures of the tank?
