Live Rock

Hello all!! New to the site (but not completely New to saltwater - I had a fish only 75 gallon before moving out of state).

I have a 29G biocube. My question is I am waiting for the LFS to get some live rock. I currently have live sand and a hermit (given out to borrow to help cycle the tank- will go back to store, very large) I was going to cycle with cured live rock, but another fish store guy said to cure it again by putting it in a tub for a couple of weeks with a powerhead. Is this necessary. He said to avoid the nitrogen cycle because it produces nitrates - bad for corals. Also he said to remove the bioballs --again a nitrate causer.
While I'm here I have lots of bubbles and it looks like a film on the surface of the water, is this okay do I need to upgrade the pump? why the film?

Any help will be wonderful.

1st :welcome to nanotank.
2nd. LR. the LR is going to suffer some die off while it is out of water. between the LFS and your tank. This is probably why they are saying to put it in a bin and let that die off cycle out before putting it into your tank. I would agree if you were putting it into an established tank. Your tank will need it to help the cycle anyhow so I say ignore him on this point.
3rd. The film on top of your water is bad. If you cannot get a skimmer that will skim the top layer of water when it goes into the back chambers then you can postion the power head or just the return to interupt the surface of the water. This will allow the water to oxygenate as well as deal with this oily build up.

Hopefully others will chime in with more input. Good luck.

Thanks KidNano. Positioned return to interrupt the surface of the water. Some particulate matter and bubbles in water. I will let you know how it goes.

Should I get a skimmer or additional powerhead.

A skimmer is a nice addition how ever not entirely necessary. With weekly water changes they aren't really necessary from what I've been told.

An additional powerhead is completely up to you and your tanks needs. You'll have to see how the current flow is working for you and then add if necessary.
