Jesse's 20L SPS tank

About a week or so ago I found a tiny piece of orange digitata that broke off of a colony that is long-gone. I got rid of the mother colony about 2 or 3 months ago, but somehow this piece managed to stay alive half-buried under sand since then. So I mounted it and it appears to be doing well...

And just thought U would share a couple macros... :D

Forgot to mention that I got my hands on a batch of live phyto and zooplankton from a marine biology lab. They were done with it so I swooped in and snagged a bottle-full before they dumped it into our various tanks...

My SPS especially loved it! I waited till about 2 hours after lights-out and turned off my pump, then dumped the bottle into the tank. Within seconds, a bunch of the polyps were closing up as they captured the plankton from the water column. My neon green sarco also seemed to really like it.

Time for some update/growth shots! The pics on the left were taken around March 28 when I received them. The ones on the right were taken tonight, April 15... not bad for 19 days growth huh?? The tips have healed up well from being a little banged up during shipping.

You may have noticed the eggcrate... well here is a new FTS...

Hey Jesse, everything looks really cool. Your lighting really brings out the colors. one question for you.

1. Why'd you put the crate in there? Are you just trying to get everything growing before you lay it out? Just curious.
2. is that a clam in your fuge? What kind?
3. I forget what your fuge consists of?

Yeah I love the T5s. These were actually taken with only the ATI Blue Plus and a Geisemann Super Actinic though. Then I played with the WB a little bit/

I put the crate in there because I am converting the tank over to a propagation-style tank. There will be at least one more shelf on top of the one that is in there. I need to drop the existing one down an inch or so too. I had so many problems with the batch of LR I got from my brother-in-law (a fuzzy growth, nuisance macroalgaes, tons of bubble algae on the underside) that I decided why not?

I dont know exactly what that is. I was busting up the rock as I was removing it from my display and he was wedged in there. I figured I would throw him in my fuge.

I have a section that is nothing but LR (about 20 lbs or so) and a large amount of red grape macro (anybody want some?? $10 plus shipping!!). Then there is a 6g or so section that is bare bottom, a piece of LR (about 3 pounds or so), and a big clump of chaeto.

cool nice pics - quite a collection you've built there
hmmm... makes me curious?
so does this mean a new display tank is in the works or are you just cooking your rock for a few months, to put back in there or are you keeping it this way?

No, no plans for a new display any time soon although I have an oak stand/canopy for a 40g... hmmm. LOL. Maybe someday.

I will be keeping it like this most likely. Ill try cooking the rock that was in the display and we'll go from there. I'm going to try my hand and coral propagation. I was actually surprised to find out that both my wife and I like this look. It showcases the individual corals much better.

So are you going to just sell of the coral as they get to big? It's seems like you(at least I would) would want a tank to display what you've grown in a natural state. i agree it does look cool and it's a very interesting project. If I'm ever knowledgable and patient enough to propogate corals I think I would have two tanks. One for Display....... with MH for Shimmer. Love the shimmer.

For now though I'd like to start collecting some cool shrooms and zoos and polyps and stuff that's easier. John and Dawns shroom crops and zoo garden were inspiring for me. Do you have any you might like to frag or sell to a poor guy who has hospital bills coming out of his ears because his unborn child is already demanding so much attention? I might be able to scrounge up a few bucks.

That looks like the direction I am going right now. There will be one more shelf in there... the very light-demanding acros will be on the upper shelf, the other SPS like the milleporas etc will be on this larger lower shelf, and the zoanthids/palys will be on the lower shelf in the shade of the upper shelf... make sense?

Sure! Im going to get my hands on some plugs, chop up some of the zoas/palys that I have right now, and would be glad to sell them for cheap to fellow nanotankers!

Ill even have acros and millis sooner or later too.

BTW, I got my hands on an Aqua-C Remora skimmer for a pretty sweet price. I'm gonna clean it up tonight and try to get it up and running tomorrow with a new MJ1200.

I got a sweet deal on a nice-sized red/orange cap frag (or small colony!)...

With the flash it is an orange color...

Under my lighting though it looks like this...

I really like this piece even if I paid full price for it... for $15, I love it even more! It measures at least 4" across at it's widest point.

Well today I added a pretty rare piece to my "collection". It isnt an SPS but eh...

I present to you..... Joker palys!

These have gone for $100+ for 3 polyps on the internet. These particular Jokers come from the fragglereef.com strain. There are at least 12-15 healthy polyps. I aquired them in a trade...

Congrats on the new addition Jesse!!
Looks like it's going to be a great show piece!!
Would there be any chances of fraggin' it off in the next frag swap? ;-)
(just thought I'd ask...... wink wink)

I like your new avatar. Not quite as funny but just as fun to look at. What kind of camera are you using? You've produced some really cool pics. Do you mess with your lighting when photographing?
