You can get away with the water changes and no skimmer however they are pigs when they eat and a bit on the messy side which is why I said about the duel filters .

Hi sadielynn,

What kind of media should be in the filters?

With the nanocube I could upgrade the pump and only use the last chamber for a Refugium the other two could be used as fillters.

you wont necessairly need to up grade pumps but do consider using 1 chamber for the poly/carbon filter and a full unit of chemi- pure - as for the fuge you could use the last one for that however keep in mind that you want a captive bred from a reputiable dealer such as liveaquaria and they are all ready weened on to mysis shrim

Hi sadielynn,

Do you think I will need a powerhead in this tank or the filter flow should be enough?

Thanks for all your help

Keep the power head you may find that you need to down grade the size of it as it may be too much what size powe head comes with it ?

that sounds good keep in mind when feeding them you need to turn off pumps and filters as they are methodical eaters they will stare their food down before attacking it . I turn mine off 10 minutes before feedings and leave them down for another 30 or so after feeding .Then I hit them to stirr up the food and let him know to move from the feeding station to a less turbulent area after 5 more minutes he has usually moved . We have been finding him hitching at night to the featherduster and usually that is in the very front of the tank so far the feather duster doesnt seem to mind when you look for rock look for tongan rock as it has more hitching area to it

Thanks for all the help Sadielynn.

I picked up a bit of LR on the weekend from a local reefer for cheep and I have a few smaller rocks in my FOWLR tank I am going to use. I just mixed up the water tonight and added the rock into my 10G QT. I will leave it in there while I find the money to order my Nanocube. That should start the cycle off. Should I do water changes during the cycle? When the Nanocube comes I will add the sand LR and all the water from the 10G. Then I will just need to bit more water and finish the cycle.

I don’t think I will build a refugium in the filter. I don’t want the seahorses to get use to live food.

I am going to be moving all my corals and LR from my 2.5 into this tank too.

Thanks,

Eric

When you transfer your rock and such over you may set off a bit of a small cycle do watch for that . Remember that you want your tank to be mature before introduction of the seahorse . There will still be pods that they will find and eat like ours but he gets fed the mysis shrimp .I would not do a water change during the cycle since there are no fish in the tank . When the cube arrives you could transfer the LR and place sand in and seed it from an established tank I would not transfer the sand as that will disturb the bacteria and set off a bit of a bigger cycle . Here is how I would do it .
Keep the LR in a tank
when the cube arrives add new sand seed with some old sand
add 1/2 the water volume to the cube (6 gallons) top with fresh salt water .(kinda like a water change)
continue to allow it to mature for 6months to a year (a year is better) then add the seahorse of your choice once all levels indicate stablity
