Just one word of advice Leaky , wait at least a year for you to work the kinks out and get established then if you want one look for a captive bred horse you will be happy you did

Hi Sadielynn,

I have been talking to the guys over at seahourse.org and they told me unless I get a H. zosterae (dwarf seahorse, no in Canada can get thses and you can not even have LR in the tank) there is no way I can have a seahorse in a 10-20G tank (I need a 30G+ tank). They told me the reidi's become way to big. Your seahorse does not look that big. How big id it? Should I lesson to these Seahorsers? I was thining (Just thinking  ) about upgrading my tank and getting a seahorse (no fish just one seahorse or maybe a pair) tank bread for sure.

Here is my post.

I have mine in a 7
now I am not saying that it is right but the tank has been up for over a year, you need to let it up for the full year to establish pods ect . When you order get a captive bred that is eating mysis shrimp . Dwarfs are one of the hardest to care for as they require live feedings multipule times aday.
We mulled it for a bit and I decided that I was up for the challange. I placed the order for my seahorse and he arrived I dripped him to his tank then placed him into the tank right off the bat he started exploring , at the point that I added him I did turn the pupms off , and brought them back up slowly .
You will need live rock for them to hitch on to ......Our guy is about 4-5 inches .On day 3-4 he started taking mysis and is taking full feedings . Some captives will turn to live food only because of the shipping it is a bit traumatic for them.....mine took almost a week to take full feedings ...... When we feed him the pumps are turned off for 45 -1 hour so that he can eat , I feed him 1 time a day and he seems to be doing fine ..... I think that we will be going to every other days here to see if he is ok if he appears to stress I will feed him right away .....I would say if you want one get your tank ready and let it mature as you study for it

Hi sadielynn,

What you think can I fit a few (Hippocampus reidi tank bread) in a 10G or maybe a Nanocube 12DX? If there any coral I to stay away from? Are there any inverts that are bad news with seahorses? I would turn the fillter into a refugium (flow of live food all the time). I will also run it for a long time before I get one. I just want to plan what I want before I setup my tank this time.

Thanks for all your help

Eric

I would do NO more than 1 in those size tanks . The 12 would be better but you could do a 10 gallon safely in my humble opinion . I would definatly say away from anenomes .Watch your current they like current but not strong current however it is my experience that they can adapt to stronger currents if they are tank bred....You will need to monitor h20 quaility 1 x a week but again I would only say 1 per tank perhaps 2 if you overfilter and as long as there are no other fish in that tank you could do 2 go for a mated pair for long term sucess

Hi sadielynn,

They will be no other fish or anemones, just a few shrimps.

I would like to get a pair if possible.

I was just thinking of Zoas, Yellow Polpys,GSP's, Mushrooms, Pumping Xenia,a few Candy Canes, Kenya Trees and maybe a frag of Yellow Suns. Do you think that will work?

I will get lights with 4 Watts per Gallon so it will not get too hot. That should be enogh light for those corals.

I will do weekly water changes and turn the filter into a refugium.

Thanks for your help

I think i am going to go with a Nanocube 12 DX, It is almost the same price as a new light system for my 10G tank (If you factor in that I would need to replace my 10 QT tank with a new one too). just need to come up with some money tank might take a few weeks. Do you think I will need to upgrade the pump or will a powerhead work ok?
