and EVERYTHING DIES! We've been having some AC issues and when we came back in town after a long weekend our house was 97 degrees inside. Yup, everything was dead in both tanks. Water temps were around 95. Four years of collecting and everything is gone. The house smelled horrible as you can imagine. The worst part is the AC is still out so as I write this, its 94 degrees in my house. We slept at a hotel last night but are trying to tough it out tonight. I'm thinking of charging my landlord for all the dead livestock. I'm so upset...

I am SOO sory for your losses DJ... I can empathize with your situation. THis very thing happened to me on my honeymoon... i forgot to set the thermostat down to 78* and came to to 95*+ temps in the house and only a couple things alive in my tank. It is such a rotten feeling and it really takes the wind out of your sale. I hope that you are able to recover and I am sure that there are a few people around here who may be able to help you get back into it with a frag or two here and there.

I also hope that you are able to get the A/C fixed so that you can get back to living in your house.

Sorry for you misfortune we under went a major heat wave that attacked the SF Bay Area last week. It was 105 degrees in my condo and we have no A/C at all. Just three large fans that would blow hot air....

If it weren't for my JBJ chiller, my tank would be gone corals, fish and critters. This is one of the reasons that I made sure our new home would have Central A/C in two separate zones up stairs and downstairs....

Steven had a similar problem with his AC unit fan crapping out at his new home, he was very upset but managed to have nothing happen to his mini reef...

I can only imagine comming home and seeing everything like a soup, it happen to me once back in my early days of reefing, I came home to a heater that had malfunctioned and cooked my nano, everything smelled terrible....

I hope you get some type of reinbursement from your landlord as it sounds he is a fault...

If on the likely chance that the landlord doesn't pay you maybe your home insurance will cover it. I don't know if you have that coverage but it's worth a check, two full tanks is pretty pricey. Sorry to hear that nothing survived.

Sorry to hear that DJ. Like what TimSchmidt said if it is covered you would most likely have to have receipts! Atleast that's what my buddy had to go through since he ex-roomate had an extra key and cleaned house on him!

OMG, 97! Dj, so so so sorry to hear of your misfortune. It's been a killer summer, and even our Ac in our house it died, and I was out of Ac for a few days, and it had to be a week where it was hot and humid. Temperature of my poor cube was rising up to 85 or so. I'd have to keep having to chill down the temperature. I believe that was the week my yellow neon goby died. I told my apartment manager to get a rush on getting it fixed and that I lost a fish because of it (I think he may have gotten old though, but heat could have been an issue as well) Well I got my a/c motor replaced with a new one, and a week later I received a 100 off my next months rent for all the trouble.

Thanks for the support guys. Yeah, I think its a total loss. I have a handful of zoas in a bucket but they still haven't opened in three days so I'm not too hopeful. I'll play the wait and see game.

Yes, we had central AC so that was the problem. Old house and 22 yr old AC unit that has been on the fritz since we moved in. I guess I'm over it now after the initial disgust of coming home to 'reef soup'. The landlord finally shelled out the bucks to install a new AC unit today so we're sitting in a nicely cooled house at the moment and I can finally get some sleep. Its funny how irritable a person can become after not having any sleep for 3 days.

Anyway, back to the drawing board for me. I had really gotten my grow-out tank going nicely with some awesome zoanthid color combos for trading with you guys and that is what I'm most upset about. You spend so much time and effort with frags and then just come home one day to find them dead.

Here are some before and after pics...

:anxious That sucks DJ! Sorry to hear about that. I'm in SA though to get you started back up again I have a few frags that I was trying to get rid of, but since you need some I'll be more than happy to donate them once you get your tanks up again. I have a Frogspawn w/ 2 heads, some green and blueish Zoo's, and some Orange zoo's I think. PM me and let me know. I can't fit these in my AP12 so I currently have them in my 125 waiting to find a good home.

No problem! I can only imagine how upset I would be if that happened to me. Just let me know when you want them, and I'll be more than happy to meet up with you somewhere.

I am so sorry to hear about this misfortune. I wish there was some way to go back in time and make the necessary steps to have prevented this disaster.

Brother,
As we speak I'm putting some xenia seeds in an evelope and mailing it out to you!

That does totally blow! The landlord didn't cough up the dough to restock your tank? I would doubt they'd do that anyway, man that sucks. At least you can get some sleep now, August in San Antone w/o AC can NOT be fun.

As it gets closer to October let me know where your tank is and I'll see if I can't get the local guys to make a run to LA for some things specific. The other issue will be transportation via plane, and with the recent attempted attacks in London the word is no fluids on the plane. Which is going to make transporting the 6 bottles of bourbon I have in Houston to SD really difficult.

We'll see what we can't figure out.

Sorry to hear of your loss DJ. Believe me I know how bad it feels. Lost my 75, 45 and minibow to long term power outage last year (hurricane). So I know what it is like to open your door and have that sight and odor hit you all at once (not to mention the smell of the freezer full of fish & shrimp). It was 95 degrees in my house when I got home and the smell was unbelievable.

But, this is a risk we all take. Our tanks are precariously balanced on the edge of disaster and it doesn't take a lot to destroy them. All we can do is suck it up and start over. That's what I am doing. I certainly wish you luck.

P.S. - Some of you mentioned possible insurance coverage for something like this. I work for an insurance company and I am sorry to say that no homeowner's policy that I am aware of will cover "pets" or live animals in a residence.

Lost power at my place for 9hrs on Saturday. I did manuel water flow for awhile and was starting to sweat it a little when the power wasn't back up after 8hrs, mostly concerned about lack of oxygen in the water so I bought a battery powered airpump/stone that detects when there's a power loss. Of course by the time I got home the power had been restored. One more piece of insurance. Lucky for me the temps never get too hot around here.
