This thread ought to be very interesting! Look forward to watching your new tank come to life. And starting out with such nice equipment is always a bonus! Congrats Mike.

Hey guys and gals,

Thanks for the comments. I'd like to go with a DSB on this tank. But I'm not too sure what kind of stuff I could place in my main sump?? Any ideas?? Am I suppose to leave it bare?? Or am I suppose to place live sand in there and create a refugium or live rubble.... Just a little confused on the outlets for sump ready tanks...

Sounds like a plan, going to do just that.... Can you give me an idea what light you recommend over my sump?? How much wattage?? I have the coralife mini 18 watt 10,000K , would that do the job?

what are the dimesions of the opening on your sump? whats the distance from water level to the top of the tank? what do you want to keep in there...is it going to be a refugium? the light you have might do the trick, for now atleast....you can always up grade down the road...

you MIGHT run into a problem with the water coming through the filter bag...does the filter bag hang below water level. if so you wont have a problem. if it doesnt you might want to put in a divider so it doesnt stur everything up, that is if you are planning to put sand and rubble.....ect.JMO

still very nice set up....congrats

if you are going to do a DSB I recomend you read up on some of Bob Goemans sand mail comments in FAMA or maybe the archives at WWM - I don't think three inches is enough. The one in my 125 is something like this .75"pvc - .5" eggcrate - screen - 2" sand - screen - 2" sand. A little over 5 inches in total. I did this more then 12 years ago and I think they even recomend a little deeper these days. As far as the sump goes you have many options. I run mine BB with just pumps, skimmer, carbon canister, and heater in there it is by far the easiest to maintain. This also leaves room should you ever add a kalk reactor, top off system, or any of the other toys out there. Sumps do not make good true refugiums in that a pump is between the plankton and the tank, however they are often set up this way anyway with the light cycle in reverse to conteract the natural lowering of pH at night - so that definitly is a choice. I do agree with drty811 comment that sand in a sump could be a issue if you have a lot of flow through there. And since you have such a large return pump, I would go with an "empty" sump, and if you do ever add a refugium it could be a HOT type so the plankton flows into the tank - JMO ????? Lots a ways to build a better mousetrap eh?

Sadielynn,

Your words of encouragement go a long way with me, so thanks. I've decided to just go with live rubble in the sump area and no live sand, I'm trying to set one side for the macro algae and one side for the rubble. That way I don't have all this stuff entangled in the future...

I do however like how John talks about adding Kalk cacium reactors and other little toys. I wonder how I could run a ATO machine, I'm running out of real estate in this area so I have to be certain of what I choose.

Sadielynn,

I'll make you a promise, as soon as all my stuff is up and running I will photograph everything and if it is still healthy with all this moving, you will be my first frag buddy... My brother Dragon79 has a huge colony of organ pipes that are growing very healthy I wonder if he could frag as well. His are a little different from mine, the color is different. I think it would be cool if you owned both frags.

hey, speaking of promises, where are those lights you supposed to send me? I check the mail all the time and see nothing! doh! As for my organ pipe, they are a frag, and they grow on those purple stems, but the stems don't reproduce, not that I know of. You'd need a mother colony to frag from and that's something neither of us have unfortunately...
