Mike, That rock work you did is just sweet. Very nice!!! I like what you did, looks very natural. Makes me want to have a larger tank.....doooh!!!
Are you going to add a powerhead in the main tank for flow or will that single water return suffice? You could probably attach a "T" to have two outputs to prevent dead spots and better water circulation. But over all, add the water already...this is like watching a movie. Nice, very nice indeed!!!
Does the reefkeeper come with the 8 socket power strip? I am deffinitely getting one for my birthday!!! I deserve it...LOL!!!
(are you afraid of the manananggal?) Hhaahh!

im very jealious.... JK

what kind of llighting are you going with?

cant wait to see fully set up pics....keep us informed

Thanks guys,

I'm planning on using three power heads, they are the new aqua balls by eheim. They can point in any direction and they will be run by the reef keeper so I'll get some serious movement to avoid dead spots.

The light has not been ordered yet, but it's going to be the Advanced series Coralife Aqua light. It's two 150 watt 20,000K bulbs. I plan on adding two 54 watt actinics as well. Bringing me up to 408 watts.

Leahfish,

Because I purchased the Oceanic reef ready tank, it came with the megaflow kit which includes this drain pipe....

I had no idea that without this type of configuration you get a loud sound, gooo thing I invested into this type of tank....

My wife would kill me with all that sound...

Here is a shorter link to what leaf is talking about...

Incysor,

If I want to add an ATO, how big of a bucket should I purchase? How much evaporation do you suppose I will get per day? I'm not using a glass top, as I was told evaporation is really good in tanks.

I was thinking of just adding water myself each day, but if that is hard to do I rather invest into a ATO.

I've got 110w VHO, one 175w 20k MH, and a 96w 50/50 powerquad over the two tanks. I lose about a gallon a day to evap with the central AC set to 75 during the day and 70 at night.

It just depends on how much space you have to work with under the stand. The trash can I'm using is taller and thinner than a 5g salt bucket, so it has a smaller footprint, which leaves a bit more room for me to eventually add the refugium.

Looking at the pics of your aquascaping you may run into a similar problem as the one I've had, especially near my overflow, in that it's very vertical, which doesn't leave much 'shelving' to place corals. Adding new stuff to the tank has actually been sort of problematic in this regard.

Update,

Yesterday I raced home from work to fill up my tank with my catalina water. After lugging up 11 five gallon containers I fire up the tank to find that my Deltec skimmer has been connected totally wrong.

Ocean water starts to leak out of my cabinet and I freak out and have to do a major clean up work.

I then discover that the skimmers return pipe must be higher than the sump and that was not the case, I had plumbed it as a pipe fitting going up 90 degrees then back to the sump.

Man what a headache, needless to say I had to drain the tank to get to the back and re-do the plumbing, major work for me, but I did it and I got awesome results once I fired up this skimmer for a second time.

I have some new pics of the setup so you can see what I changed on the pipes to get it to work; you'll notice I fitted a elbow pipe at a 45 degree angle and it did the job.

I then played with the setting of the water flow intake to the skimmer and got the equilibrium that I need for adequate skimming.

I still see the haze in the tank from side to side, showing signs that my rocks have a way to go, they are still leaking out ammonia.

I'm wondering something, since I mixed them up with 20 lbs of cured live rock and 4 lbs of cured rubble in the sump will that help cure the other rocks quicker?

I've noticed that my sump which has the rubble rock is completely fogged up from the inside. Remember I do have a sump lid, I'm wondering if it's because the live rubble is cured and it's feeding on the ammonia, I don't know?

Any suggestions on what's happening and how long you think my wait will be?

Mike

Next project on tank is the water cirulation. After much debate on what type of powerhead to use in this setup, I went with EHEIM's 1212 Aquaball.

I went this route for the value of price, durability, heat transfer and nozzel direction. It gives off only 6watts of power and gives me 172 GPH that may be controlled. It's only $19 dollars.

They are large, I've seen them at the petshop but I can conceal them pretty well, you know me, clean look in the display is my goal.

I will be running three of them on my reef keeper; that will give me a total of 516 gallons of GPH at different intervals of water current.

I like the fact you can move the ball around like a quickcam ball for more accurate precise water control.

Here is a picture of the aquaball 1212.

Drty,

I've been hearing that I should go much more GPH than the aquaballs for my 72 tank. They have recommended that I go with three Maxi-jet 900, that give of 230 GPH at only 8.5 watts of heat.

My return pump with 4 feet of head force brings my Mag 700 to 480 GPH. If I go with the Maxi's I will be at a total of 1170 GPH total.

I'm going to be using my reef keeper to circulate all three. Two of them rotate at different times and the third one is independat of the other two and runs. Do you think I'd be okay with just the aquaballs?

Hey mike, I know you didn't ask me but.........
eheim of course is a great name and they should do fine for you (~13x) and I know you've probably done the math already (maxi's ~16x) not a substantial difference. I have about 16x or so (hard to calculate actual flow of my returns) in my 125 with the return and 3 maxi 1200's with a wave timer and it works fine. I have two of them opposing each other on the end that I want to have more flow and the third behind the rock on the "low" flow end. However in my hex I'm trying out the seios - I've heard a lot of good things about them but can't speak on reliability yet because I have only had them a month. Initial assesment though is I really like them. 620gal/hour on just 8W - pretty good return for heat. And they are very low pressure high volume pumps so you can get a lot more flow without the high velocity stream created by normal powerheads (no worries about having them pointed directly at something and hurting it - you could put one of these in a 20 gal nano even, drty811). At this point if I could do it again (or had the money) I think I would use the bigger seios in my 125 - maybe a pair of 820's of even 1100's (I think thats the next size up). Nice project by the way - very clean looking setup!!!!

im not exactly sure what option you should go with. its your call on this matter, plus i only have a 20L and a 10gal saltwater set up, the rest are freshwater planted.i never researched anything for my 75.i wouldnt be the best person for advise on this.good luck to you and happy reefing.im sure which ever you choose will do fine. i wish i could afford to set up my 75. thats my dream tank

your project, your experimenations. see how it runs with your first option, if it doesn't float, go with suggestion two. Doesn't take you long to change something anyway, lol.

I predicted this happening from the beginning when you had your first nanocube 12. So I am not surprised that we'll all see changes in your setup. Good luck in what you choose in the end.
