who all uses skimmers and what kind?

on RC a kid used a canister filter for a over flow. the return line from the canister goes to a refugium. can any one for see a problem with this? I mean if the canister is empty there wouldnt be much nitrates being made right?

I moved my rock with my hairy mushrooms trying to find where my red polyps went to. When i put the rock back down 2 of the mushrooms had this white thread looking stuff coming out the middle. Should i be worried?

I had xenia in my tank for almost 8 months. I cut it off the LR then it died. I got a big stock of some new stuff and now its shriveled and looks like its dieying. why is this stuff so tempermental? It lived and thrived for the longest time but now it wont stay alive.
