    Because bio-wheels... and bio-balls, ceramic rings, etc... break down nitrates at a rate that is inappropriate for reef tanks and can actually lead to higher nitrates/nitrites. They are also unable to house anaerobic bacterias... LIve rock houses both aerobic and anaerobic bacterias. Hope...

    I wouldnt avoid the foam all together... the key is to keep it clean. the foam is one of the imortant factors of having crystal clear water, but if it gets dirty, it will do more harm than good possibly. as far as overdoing it, I dont think that it would hurt anything, but you dont need to...

    $35 sounds pretty fair actually. You would spend about $20 just on the polished aluminum if you were to do it yourself... then you wouldnt be guaranteed to have the appropriate angles in the reflector either... take a look at this for a comparison...
