    High Nitrate

Your ceramic rings and bio balls is probably the cause of your high nitrates as it'll be the one area where all the nitrate gets trapped. Also, you haven't mentioned what you have in your tank. If you have a lot of fish, that's another cause. The other thing that got me is that you said...

Newbie to SW - research first :)

Well with no live corals in there, amount of lighting really doesn't matter, you can have whatever. If you put LR in there, it's fine without the LS, if you just want little "critters" as you say. You'll need some kind of PCs of some sort at least so that they LR doesn't bleach white. I see...

    Order of ops...

Most definitely. That setup works just fine. I have it run that way for both my 6 gallon and my girlfriends 12 gallon. Your main concern in all of this is going to be "heat" You have 2 powerheads, so be cautious. You may want to get them on timers so they go on and off to compensate for the...

    BUBBLES QUESTION

bubbles follwed by purplish/brown ugly slime is cyanobacteria. best thing to combat is is mixing up some chemi-clean. (make sure it's well dissolved, and toss it in) should rid it. Diatoms stage in general is an "ugly" time. All you can do is keep doing water changes and watching...
