So when I start to cycle my tank this weekend I should leave the lights off for a month? This won't have a negative impact on the good stuff that needs to photosythesize? Here's another question. One of the guys at the store I buy at told me when I get my live rock to scoop up a bunch of...

    Phischy's Project-3days to start

I just wish I had more time after work but this fall is crazy. Ok, life is crazy in general. Right now I need two 45d PVC elbows, get two extensions of flex hose for the skimmer so I don't have a waterfall and so the pump will be resting on the bottom of the sump, mount all the electronic...

    Good movies

I saw Napolean Dynamite....very odd movie. Very strange and awkward. It's all about this goofball in Highschool. Where on earth they found that actor I have no idea, but he's awesome. I laughed pretty hard at several parts and I'm sure everyone can relate in one way or another. It's worth...

    My living room.

Do those evil voodoo masks make the fish happy? I like your setup. I'll be back in H-town for christmas, I'll have to stop by and see everything in person!

Which test kit do you use?

How about 'other'? I found a TetraTest kit that one of my old roommates bought in college. Plus some misc testing solutions for nitrite/nitrate

Cost to date: My costs to-date: Stand/Canopy - gift from my dad. He estimates the stand/canopy setup would run about $1,000 if he were to sell it on the market. Lights: I got the ballasts for free, spent $44 on two bulbs today Pump: Quiet One 4,000: 103.99 Sump: Sea Clear...

    Phischy's Project-3days to start

Hardware! So today I went to Aquaticware House to get all the hardware I need for my tank. While I was there two of their guys talked me into a different setup that will hopefully work very well. I did sump the tank, and we went with a SeaClear 15 gallon which just fits into my stand. In...

    Fluidized Beds

But do they actually work? I read they're good for converting amonium from fish waste and decomposing food, so if you have little of either they should be useless on a reef tank w/ steady water changes, right?

    Fluidized Beds

    Anyone use them anymore?

I also don't think the outflow from the skimmer is going to be fast enough to feed my return pump. I see what you're saying about drilling the holes, I hadn't thought of that, but it would work peachy! Plus I wouldn't need the ball valves either then, right? This weekend I'm going to get...

    Fan question for you

Vents in the top of the hood would increase air flow and I was going to have pops do it to mine but I couldn't explain to him how I wanted it done. Looking at the hood now (it's great) but damn if it isn't heavy. I've got ideas for him for the next time he builds one to make it lighter. As...

    Phischy's Project-3days to start

When I was thinking of the strainer I was thinking more along the lines of a polybag to eliminate all detritus from the water flow so that nothing enters the pump or SCWD to foul it. If I sump, which it is looking like what I'll do, I'll change my flow patters as I realize having the drains...

    Fan question for you

Another thing I've read for heat management is to drill the top of your tank to allow hot air to rise away instead of being blown out the rear of the canopy. Therma induction (conduction?), anyway, hot air rises so give it a way to escape.

Got my tank! Woohoo! Got my tank last night! *do a little dance* Nate came over to deliever it and I'm glad I went with the taller tank, else it'd look way out of whack, the stand is pretty beefy and this tank looks good with it. So my plan is for Saturday or Sunday to start getting the...

    Working wit Acrylic

Nate called me to tell me my tank is in and he's going to bring it by tonight. So I'll ask him to see what he thinks about the acrylic work etc... I may have a closed system after all. So many damn options!

    Fan question for you

In an ideal world, maybe one blowing in and one pulling out? Depends on how closed in your light fixture is. I would think blowing cool air in would force the hot air out. I'm not planning on having any fans on my system yet b/c it's usually in the 70's here so heat built up isn't a huge...

    Working wit Acrylic

I think the tank may be done, but it would be an addition so maybe not a huge deal. I'll call my guy today to see if he can't track it down and find out where it is. I don't even Have anything yet and already this tank keeps getting more expensive!!!

    Working wit Acrylic

Here's the deal: I'm going to install an inbox surface skimmer on my new yet to be delievered acrylic tank. I'll then drill the base of the tank so I"ll have out flow directly into my sump. Who's worked with acrylic? I'll have to get a flat piece, notch the top to skim and then heat up...

    Phischy's Project-3days to start

Although I had my stand custom designed to include drawers, I do now sort of understand why stands don't have 'em. Not that it's a huge issue but it does make things a big more interesting. The new (rev 145) plan for the tank. I am goign to sump that sucker. And it won't really be that much...

    Phischy's Project-3days to start

I figure by the time it's all set up with head height, the SCWD, the total of 4 splits I'm going to need a higher rated pump to high about 400gph with a 650 pump, so basically that's 10x the total capacity of the tank (my tank will be 38.5 gallons but with a 4" sand bed I'm looking at...
