My 1st marine tank... and its a nano! =0) ::UPDATED 10/5::

Interesting shapes you got there. Cool setup. What kind of sand are you using for the substrate? B

    rapid resp .

I generally think that freshwater dips are more stressful than they are helpful. Especially if the fish is already sick/stressed. 50% water change is a large fast change for a fish/coral to adapt to. Even if you're correcting a problem, they've had time to adjust to the problem parameters...

    questions..

Sorry, no tangs in anything under 75g. Even as juveniles they require a lot of swimming space. You'll come to find as you get more experience that there are a lot of LFS and online vendors that don't know what they're talking about, and are willing to give you false info to make a sale. You...

A college student's move to saltwater....

Actually additives like aquaclear or all the different dechlorinators are not a particularly safe way to go when it comes to saltwater, and especially reef tanks. If you're using well water you're water might be clean enough to get away with it, but most cities put lots of additives in the...

    are RO/DI needed?

THe short answer is yes RO/DI water is necessary. That doesn't mean you need an RO/DI unit. You can purchase the water at most LFS. Some grocery stores carry it, although you've got to read the labels closely. Distilled water is not the same as dionized water. The watermill things are RO...

72 Oceanic Reef Ready Bow Front Evolution...

AFAIK they're standard Coralife endcaps, and bulb holders. I'll try to remember to check them tonight when I get home. The endcaps came with the icecap ballast when I bought it. (used) I bought the holders from citypets. B

A college student's move to saltwater....

If you're on a campus you might be able to get it from a lab. If they have filtered water in the caf, or dorms it may be RO, or RO/DI water. My office has RO filtered water in the breakrooms. Some grocery stores sell it. You have to read the labels carefully though, and look for reverse...

    Anemone

Totally avoidable if you have space to put a sponge over the intake...But most nanos don't really have enough room for that. B

    Catilina lights

Never heard of them. Link? I'd be careful to make sure that the lamps are the correct type for marine tanks, and that you'll be able to find replacement bulbs. Heck for that price, they're cheaper than coralife replacement bulbs, I'd probably just buy a stack of them an store them. :) B

72 Oceanic Reef Ready Bow Front Evolution...

I routinely go a month or six weeks without a water change. A lot depends on your setup though. How much it's skimmed, what your bioload is like, how mature the system is, etc... When my Father and I made the canopies for the tanks we put fans on one end, and the top. The fans on the end...

    help on new tank

I really like the dimensions of the 30g oceanic cubes. But it's just a personal preference. There isn't any real advantage between it and a standard sized 29g tank. B

A college student's move to saltwater....

Oops...Didn't read all the way down...Thought I did, but must have gotten confused with one of the several other 'I'm new' threads. :pom Top-off water needs to be fresh water. RO/DI water. When you lose water to evap, salt is left behind so your salinity rises. Adding fresh water...

    Automatic and recharged moonligths

Hmm....I guess my question is how big a solar panel do you need to power 5-10 blue LEDs. I've already got moonlight kits with the wiring, connectors, adapter, etc... to run 10 blue LEDs. But it would be cool to mount a solar panel inside the canopy and just have them run off the energy...

    Anemone

Because you don't want your $16 anemone moving around the tank stinging and killiing $300 worth of coral, or wandering into the intake for your PH, and getting chewed up and causing an ammonia spike. B
