    Newbie - Starting 20G - recommended subtrate

http://www.marinedepot.com/aquarium_sub ... sp?CartId= any of these will work good. The grain size will depend on what you want to have in the tank. If you add something like a yellow watchman goby then you will want to keep the grain size around <1mm'ish. I wouldn't go too small because...

How much can a normal electrical outlet take?

pc, monitor, cordless mouse base, lamp (wasn't on), modem, router the fire started at my powersupply and not the outlet. Personally I think the inverter took a dump because it didn't affect anything else in my pc (luckily). It melted the ac plug so much that the leads touched and then they...

    DIY: Test Tube Holder

I know this isn't exactly something to be excited about. I was running inventory this past weekend to see what I needed to setup a new tank. I decided that everything could use a good wash down. As I was washing my test tubes I remembered how much of a pain it was setting them upside down on...

    Base Rock

it's going to be a 29g so not quite a nano. The more i read about the other rocks the more it doesn't sound like they will work that well. Guess i'll drop the $5/lb for LR ;-)

    phos ban or phosguard?

I've used the phosguard and it works. Although I'm not sure how well it works compared to phosban. I just mixed it with the carbon in my HOT Magnum filter and it kept my phosphates under control. That's gotta say something because I use tap on my tanks.

    Base Rock

I'm looking for advice on types of rock to use as a base rock. I'm from Indiana so my options are probably pretty limited. I'm trying to keep from having rock shipped due to the cost of shipping. I have heard that limestone can be used as a base rock but I haven't heard much about it. Any...

How much can a normal electrical outlet take?

250watts should be fine to put with other appliances. 250w @ 110ac is only ~2.5amps. You should limit your amperage draw on any single circuit to 10amps. You could push 15amps but you risk tripping the breaker. Never tier power strips. That's asking for an overload and a fire. On a...

    BLACK SAND

The only issue that I have with the black sand is that it's usually not aggregate. Meaning that the sand won't act as a pH buffer. You will just have to watch the pH closer in your tank than if it were aggregate sand.

Brown stuff on my sand and rocks?

Just make sure that when buying off of ebay that the test chemicals aren't past their expiration date.

    I'm back...

Just wanted to say hi and that I'm getting back into the hobby. My 20g tank had a bio-collapse (which I'm thinking my goby contributed to). Anyway I'm looking at setting up a 30g or another 20g. I haven't decided on anything yet other than I know that I will need a stand this time. Anyway...

    Oceanic 37g Show Aquarium

That price is a steal. I would buy the 37g knowing that it will be a slow upgrade.

    Software for tracking parameters???

If you have the Office suite then you can build a quick database in Access. I built one once but I was horrible at keeping it updated so it never was used.

    phosphate

If you want to get your phosphates down try Phos-Ban. It works really well. I mix it with my carbon in my HOT Magnum filter and it keeps my phosphates down.

6 gallon CPR cube complete disaster !!!!

Sorry that you had to go through this the hard way. Hopefully everyone setting up a new tank will remember to fill the tank with freshwater before installation. I can't believe the customer service that you got. What a bunch of crap. Good luck with your new tank.

    Gunk in Sandbed

I have the same thing. I don't really think it's cyno though. I could be wrong but it looks more like coraline growth on sand & glass. Mine is mostly green and a dark reddish purple. I have had bubbles form in the same area so I would assume that it's from the anaerobic bacteria like incysor...
