we are upgrading from our 20gal hex tank. We have a new tank, a 30 gal (36x16x11) ....
do you think that a light with :( 2x 250W DE HQI, 2x 65W Compact Fluorescent, 6x Dual Bluemoon LED ) is too much? any advice is welcome
Thanks in advance

I don't know much about MH however I would have to say that is too much. there is a member here that has 2 175's on a 90. Now some would argue that isn't enough for his tank, but you would probably do well with one 150 watt MH. not to mention the electric bill would be unnecessarily high. That's an extra 150 kilowatts a month if you run them 10 hours a day.

;-)

if you wanted to run two lights because of the length I would go with 2-70 watts. your tank is only 11 inches deep.

Yeah IMO that is way too much. How deep is the tank top to bottom? Is it 16" or 11"? You might want to look into T5HO's for that shape tank. You arent looking at the Odyssea fixtures by any chance are you? I would suggest avoiding those as there are quality concerns there. What kind of corals are you keeping?

okay thanks....
tank is 16" top to bottom, and hubby wants a mostly reef tank. we had some (4) small mushroom coral in hex, but they unfortunately did not make it...don't know why. He said it had 2 T5s, and something, but I don't know exactly. Not much help, huh? I will talk to him tomorrow and repost. But thanks for the input

I know a guy that has 4x36 watt 36" T5 fixtures that he doesn't need anymore if your interested in going that direction. He goes by the name Reefman23. :snap:

If you go T5s the most important thing is that each bulb has an idividual reflector. That route for a 16" deep tank will be as good as if not better PAR readings than MH without the heat and energy costs.

Here is a shot of the bulbs with individual reflectors.

Hey Tim, I'm assuming that's your hood. what do you have that fan hooked up to? right now I have two fans under my hood that I've connected to my computer. i'm considering a fan controller because I need to add a few to my new stand. that thing is completely enclosed and gets really hot and humid when all closed up. Just curious. Sorry for the brief change in topic.

I have it hooked to a ac to dc converter directly. I would recommend a fan controller though. It helps fine tune sound and heat control. I am just going to get an ACIII or RK elite to control my stuff though (next year).
