White stuff on live rock

Last weekend we set up our tank (29 gal biocube) and added live sand (25 lbs) and live rock (22 lbs). The colors on the rock were great, lots of green and purple with some really cool reds thrown in.

last night we turned on the lights and found that alot of the color is now covered with a white substance. It almost looks like it was hit with powdered sugar.

Is this a normal thing (we're assuming it is) and will we regain the great colors we had 2 days ago?

Thanks in advance!

Hi and :welcome to Nanotank! Your tank has just been setup and needs time to cycle and establish itself which is probably why you are seeing things whiten or lose color. Don't worry, as long as you maintain good water parameters, it will flourish with color again.

If you are using a fine grade sand then you are probably seeing a 'settlement' from the sand being kicked up into the water column by the flow. If not then you are probably seeing the beginning of some dieoff from the liverock which is normal as well with your tank beginning its cycle.

Jack,
Not to worry... I just finished cycling a tank and had the same thing happen to me. I had a ton of colors on my live rock b4 the cycle, and now there seems to be more than there was at first.

:welcome to Nanotank!

Cheers,
J

are you buffering, mine ended up being calcium deposits from my buffer, if they flake off if you rub them, then that's prob what they are.
