I personally dont use any salt mixes but I know the Tropic Marin line is very good. Instant Ocean Reef Crystals is also supposed to be good. There are some pretty big differences is levels of traces, Ca, etc from brand to brand.

Hopefully others can chime in and help out too.

Hey I understand about LFS prices. I was calling around for a Mag pump and everyone around here, except for one place (which was sold out) was more than double the cost of Marine Depot. IIRC I will be using Instant Ocean

Instant Ocean is good but make sure you get a hydrometer to test the salt water. I didnt have one at first and I just added what the box said for salt and it was way too much.

The amount of salt that it takes to obtain the correct salinity is based on your water source, not the printed directions.

water quality

thanx for that bit of info it does make alot of sense being not all water is the same with all the different additives each county & state make to keep water to the standards req with run off (river & lake ) or well systems...but do have another ?
is it better to have a saltwatermix pree made & set aside in a 5 glln bucket or make what you need on the spot
or will evaperation do much to change the salinity&other levels

Make it before hand in a 5 gallon bucket and put a lid on it. Just make sure to get it at the temp of the tank and mix the water a bit with a PH before using it.
