Whats a nano?

Considering the ba-jallions of gallons of water in the ocean, I consider my 40gal to be a nano. Thus I'm here. ha ha ha ha ha :p

<SLAP!>

Stop confusing the newbies...

djconn has posted here and here that for this board the definition is 20gal and less, even though we all know that there isn't any hard rule as to what is a nano tank. That doesn't mean that your input/pics ect... isn't welcome.

Ah, ok, I didn't see where they were defined. Another well know nano board has the cut off at 30, total water in system, not just the show tank.

So in this one only one of mine qualifies. Ok.

Yes a nano is under 20 or 30gal depending on who you talk to. There's not a whole lot of difference between nano's and regular tanks in general. the main difference as I see it being any change in water quality will affect the system more dramatically due to a smaller buffer capacity.

I post here just becuase it's a smaller forum and I'm a moderator as well. An upside to a 20gal tank, which sometimes i thinkI should have done, is it takes less cash to make it *full*. Which is a good thing considering the price of the hobby.

Narkon, myself and everyone in this forum would love to hear about your tank. There is no huge difference between a 20 and a 30 gallon and everyone here knows that.

I'm actually considering creating a 'Not so nano nanotank' section where people with reefs over 20 gallons can post pics, etc. What do ya'll think?

Yeah, might be a bad section to have.

How I orginally got into nano tanks. Well I stumbled upon nano-reef.com, and really tweaked my interest. But my wife told me no.

So we look to get a 5'x2'x2' 150 gal tank made along with it being acrylic, also get a stand, a canopy, MH lights, refugium/sump, closed loop system, Kalk reactor, Calium reactor, overlarge skimmer for it, auto top off. Well Kevin priced it out for me for him to build it, and all I can say was wow, big chunk of money. So Stefanie looks on RC at other tanks and ask how much it would be to get a 2' cube, so I price those, which since it is no longer a standard size, it cost almost as much as the 150 gal glass tank.

So we rethought it, decide the 120 gal would be better, got price for a glass one with Kevin making all the other stuff for me, looked good, still going to cost 2k for all of it at once, but we had the down payment for it all, and Kevin said he let me make payments as I actually need the reactors.

Money has a funny way of leaving when you least expect it, and thats what our downpayment did.

So Stefanie being the lovely wife she is, told me I could get a smaller one, since I had been waiting 16 years to get into Saltwater. (Parents made me wait til I got out of the house, at which time I got married, and Stefanie put the stipulation of waiting for a house.) So now I got the 29 gal, it doesn't have reactors on it, so everything is done by hand.

My 29 gal is set up for SPS, it has a 150W DE 10K MH, with a 24" URI VHO Super Actinic, and 7x 470nm LEDs for moonlights.

I use a Rea Sea Prizim skimmer, and a TetraTec PF 500 for a refugium (and don't recommend anyone else do it), been modded to make it work.

3 power heads but they may be upgraded later: 2x Maxi Jet 900s, and 1 Maxi-jet 400.

I currently have LPS, SPS, zoas and pulsing xenia on ~40 lbs of live rock.
Cheato is in the refugium.

I will post the pics of the stuff in the photo forum under my main tank pic.

Sounds like a great set up!

To clarify the nano thing, I consider my 30 cube a Not-Quite Nano. There should be categories of nano-ness:

Pico 0-2.5 gallons
Nano 2.5-20 gallons
Slightly Nano 20-29 gallons
Not Quite Nano - 30-37 gallons (considering the 37 gallon Oceanic tank)
Not a Nano - anything above 37 gallons

:D  :D

I know, I know...anything above 20 is not really considerd a nano, but some other **cough, cough** sites consider a nano to be 30 and under. I prefer to look at my 30 as a Not Quite.

I laugh at it, for people just refer to the tank, not the water volume, so there is a guy on another site that has a 5 gal show tank, hooked up to a 15 gal sump and a 20 gal refugium.

I personally consider anything less than 30 a nano. But as mentioned before, it all depends upon who you talk to as to what answer you will get on this question.

Just so happens here, they (being the forum owner/operator) chose to specifally speacialize in show casing 20 or less. Nothing wrong with that! I do like catagorizing though as it kinda puts hobbyist on a more level playing field so to speak. There is a big difference in skill needed to maintain an eye popping 10 gallon tank and a equally impressive 240 gallon tank. Not everyone is "Big Daddy War Bucks" either and lets face it, one can have a pretty hardcore Nano for about 500.00, but that wont even get you started with a tank over 125! So I think its great to have a site that specializes in just small tanks, although I am sure most hear would welcome post on just about any tank for entertainment and appreciation purposes if nothing else.

But djconn, I think thats a stupendous idea to add a section for "slightly Nano's" as Sugar Magnolia so eloquently put it, not that I want to "corrupt" the site and the principals it was built under or anything. But that would bring a lot more reefers out there to the table.

This is a great sight and whil very few of my tanks qualify as a nano buy any strech of the imagination I do have a couple and I am really digging them more than my numerous larger tanks these days...

Just my humble opinion...so please dont tar and feather me!
