I'm setting up a 24g aquapod with the compact florescent bulbs and was wondering what material(s) would be the right combination. I plan on putting in LR and LS for biological filtration, which leaves mechanical and chemical filtration. If I'm and idiot and the information is in another post please link. Thank you for the help.

Not much. Most reefers now rely on biological filtration.
I would just be putting in a bag of good quality activated carbon and some filter floss on top if you feel the need to. If you do that you should rinse it every 2 days.
Does that tank come with a skimmer? If it does, I wouldn't worry about the floss.
You may also want to do a search on refugium or 'fuge'. You could build a small one into the area where there mechanical filtration should be. It is just some sand 6" deep, with some macro algae. This will provide a safe haven for a bunch of little critters.

I love fuges, in particulare all the copepodes that grow in them. All of my experience is with large tanks with sumps that include fuges. I used to work at an aquarium, I got to help with many tanks the largest being 850,000g. I know a lot of the techniques will transfer over but there are a few things that I have to learn when dealing with nanos due to being small, that and learning have what attracted me to this site.
I physically don't have my tank yet but I think I will still use some floss regardless. The tank should be here in 2 days, can't wait.

Carbon and floss is a good place to start like Geoff said. If you have any issues then you can start to look into stuff like phosban and so on. (but a lot of people tend to a more *natural* less chemical soltion)
So I finally got my 24 gal Aquapod today and set everything up to start the cycle. I have half the amount of sponge they give you in the back but will be taking that out too soon. I also have some macro algae that is in the main part of the tank and will be moving it to the back once i find a waterproof LED that is small enough to get light back there. Or will enough light from the canopy be enough for the algae? I will be picking up some carbon and LR ruble to put into the back tomorrow. Is there anything I'm missing or should take out?
Personally I favor the Polyfilter pad over carbon, removes many impurities from the water including phosphates. The con is that it can remove things you dose; however, I do frequent water changes (won't remove elements from salt mix). If I dose, I just turn off the sump flow for a bit and let the system soak it in~
