Hey everyone, I was just wondering what kinds of chemical media do you use and why you use it?
I use chemi-pure myself, the guy at the LFS years ago told me it was good and its been what I’ve been using since

I use Chemi Pure too and also use regular carbon. I have also used PolyFilter pads to remove contaminants/medications in the past.

I also use CHEMI PURE and POLYFILTER i cut mine in 3 pieces and change it every week or everyother week depending on how brown it gets or if gets other color than white...(brown is the normal) and also use a phosphate remover. and thats it!!

but is true to keep it simple.... i use in a daily basis the polyfilter cause my hands are in tank on tank 24/7 so just in case of any cream , soup or any chemical that will get in water polyfilter will take care of it same as carbon i change it enery 2-3 week the 1/2 unit one...

None right now... actually I have never used chemical filtration. I plan on trying to incorporate some into my system eventually though.

I use aquaclear carbon and change it once a month. Keep my water clear and from foul smell. On top of that I rinse or replace my filter pad on a week.

Does anyone use purigen? I've been using it and it seems to work well. Was going to move over to ChemiPure.

i use purigen & chemipure at sametime and well i've been looking that purigen it's helping me with my nitrates i was like 0-10 and not there alwasys at 0-5... so if i were you just stick with PURIGEN & SEAGEL... Thats what im going to do now..

Thanks.

I was wondering though, I also grow macro algae in my tank, will purigen and chemipure take away too many nutrients for the tank to sustain plant life?

Plants like Chaeto rely on phosphates, Iodine, and light. You should have no problem growing macros while running these chemical medias.

Well not really if you have light on the plants they will do fine and grow!! u know they dont depend only on nitrate & phosphates they need light too most than the other 2...

Thanks. Was only asking because since I started using PhosGard, I noticed that my prolifera started to look transparent and flimsy.

A plant is in need of nutrients when one of three major discolorations occur. If the new growth is yellowed/whitened out. If the new leaves are splotched (ie green along the veins but yellowed in the meat). or if new growth is nice and green and the old growth is whitening/yellowing out. Granted I know this to happen with non-aquatic plants, but seeing as most plants are similiar the same truths should hold up. Most plants do need time to acclimate to new conditions but I wouldn't worry too much for the first week or two.

Purigen is a better product in my opinion. I just incorporated it into my system. One of the huge advantages with Purigen is that it darkens when it is exausted and can easily be "recharged" by soaking it for 24 hours in a 1:1 ratio of water and bleach.

Is that right didnt now that mmmm 1:1 of bleach then what before introducing it to tank you have to rinse it with freshwater salt or what?? cause i have a unit and i was gonna just replace it with a new bag... mmm can you explain this jesse...

I just read carefully on the seachem site and found what u said jesse but also sounds like you have to add other chemicals to remove the chlorine and thats it to regenerate it again right....

Regeneration: Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metalic container in a well ventilated area and away from children. Rinse well, then soak for 8 hours with a solution containing 2 tablespoons of ChlorGuardâ„¢, Primeâ„¢, or equivalent dechlorinator per cup of water. Rinse well. For freshwater use, soak for 4 hours with a solution containing 1 tablespoon of buffer per cup of water (Discus Bufferâ„¢, Neutral Regulatorâ„¢, or Acid Bufferâ„¢). Original color and full activity should now be restored and Purigenâ„¢ is ready for reuse. Caution: some slime coat products may permanently foul Purigenâ„¢ and render regeneration difficult. Do not reuse if odor of chlorine is detectable. In case of doubt, soak beads in small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit.

That is what I do to regenerate it, but in addition to that ,I test for chlorine. I know some folks discard the product instead of regenerating it.
