Water softner..how does it affect RO..

I have a water softner in my home and have well water. I have my RO unit hooked up to my pressure tank...before any softening.

Anyway, my question is...if I hooked my RO up to run off the water after the softner..will it take less salt to get the mix right?

I use instant ocean and I mix ten gallons at a time and generally have to add about 1 extra cup of salt to ten gallons to get the gravity right.

I can get it right but it states to use 1/2 cup per gallon...That mixture doesn't get it done with my RO water.

Anyone have any thought on this..or better yet..experience with it?

thanks, semo..

If I am not mistaken the 1/2 cup per gallon is a general rule of thumb to mix your water to a specific gravity of 1.021, I know most reefers try to keep their salinity higher and that will take more salt to raise it to the higher level. As far as the softener goes I am not familiar enough with them to offer any perspective on how it would effect your salt mix.
