Next year, I'm going to Florida. I lived there many years ago. Now can anybody tell me if it's against the law to take things from the beach. I am putting togeather a 180 and I'm stealing the sand. I would also like to snorkle and help myself to the wildlife even the live rock. Can I be arrested? I know it's not ethical. But, it sure would be cheap. I would have things arranged to keep my captives alive. Anyone??? :pom

I really dont think it would be worth it. You know you'd be carrying around 180 lbs or so of LR, not to mention the weight of LS, that is if you got everything pound for pound to accomodate your tank. Even if you wanted just to get a few pieces, you'd better be buying it for a few dollars a pound that it costs.

As to answer in general, taking in general without paying for it, should basically answer your question....it's illegal. There is also no telling the quality of the items you are picking up. Worst of all, LR as you travel with it, would begin to stink like no other, like rotten nasty eggs. The stench alone would leave you as if you were the human skunk. You'd have to transport it seperately in some sort of crate or whatever, but this just sounds like a lot of work to me.

My advice is, have some fun out there, snorkel, take pictures, video and then just save towards making your 180 a true success.

There were some folks last year on the boards that were collectors down in Florida. I will try to find the links....

Not sure about the legality of it all though.

I'd think twice about the removal of any reef material in Florida. According to the EPA, environmental protection agency; Floridas coastline is considered a sanctuary for aquatic life and any destruction or removal to the reef denotes huge fines and possible incarciration.

It would come out cheaper if you purchased it rather than got caught....

wonder if they would let you set up a nano in your cell - sorry just me trying to be funny, but Mikes absolutly right, a few people have gotten permits to aquaculture rock by "renting" space on the seafloor, but it is illilgal to collect any coral, and with the rescent storms and bleaching events in the region it would be irresponsible as well.

There are things that you CAN legally collect. Sand is probably ok, but not really worth the effort since you'd need nearly 250lbs of sand to create a sandbed that's 4" deep in a 180g. That's using a calculator that's based on dry sand. Wet you're probalby gonna be hauling 500lbs. Rock is a no-no. Period. It's illegal without a license, and from what I've read it can take years to get a license to do this. Corals collection again is illegal without a license, and they're not easy to come by.

Fish and inverts are the good news. These are generally ok to collect with a regular fishing license, although some close checking is a good idea since there are usually some things in any area that are protected.

Then I'll stick to fish and inverts and hope the lfs have some nice stuff not offered where I live. In fact, maybe I could get a deal on some live rock (cured) w/o shipping charges, or cheaper shipping charges anyway. Don't want to go to jail. Bubba might get the wrong idea if I'm taking care of fish in my cell...ya know? Corals and rock are out. Sand...probably need a tow truck, though I might bring enough back for another nano.

Sounds like a lot of effort. I'd just snorkel or scuba @ John Pennycamp National Park - ENjoy the sites and get some ideas for your big tank. I doubt brining back 180 pounds of sand would be even worth the extra gas if you drove it.

Be careful with "wild" fish, I have heard some definite success stories, but also many who say its just not worth the trouble.

Just make sure to enjoy the vacation~
