Upgrade for My 6g Nano?

I don't know if it will fit, but more light is always a good thing (within reason and this appears to be.) If you think you can cram three bulbs the size you have now. Go for it, but remember heat may be an issue when they are all on...then you will have evaporation, so you may need an ATO. So if you want more corals that need high light go for it. But if you only want the ones you listed earlier I think that set might cause more problems. Just my opinion.

Well the 1x18w and the 2x18w both have a Total Length of - 9-1/2".
So If you guys suggested the 1x18w which is the same size as the 2x18w then I can get the 2x18w. All I would have to worry about is Evaporation right? So I should get the 2x18w...
I just want to get a better deal..because the 1x18w is like $5 cheaper than the 2x18w.
Tell Me whatcha think?
=)

same length yes.. but 2x as wide... its 2 of the 1x18 bulbs that you are looking at...

honestly, i would save myself the hassle and just get the 1x18 because we know it will fit... besides you wont feel as bad later ripping it out to put a MH in there when you get bit by the SPS bug...j/k

ok so I haven't bought it YET...because My Bf wants to know if instead of another 18watt...if I can possibly add a stronger light...
I dont know what you really mean by this. Really the only stronger lighting is MH, which you could do if you went topless and got a 70 watt JBJ Viper K-2.

Otherwise, all you can do is add more 18 watt PC's. The higher wattage PC's are going be longer an thus they wouldnt fit in your canopy.

If you added TWO more 18 watt pc's, it would be a tight fit but it could be done... here is their 3x18 watt version... http://www.nanocustoms.com/catalog/prod ... cts_id=150

I already gave you the link to the 2x18 version.

Here is a pic of what I was talking about with the MH...IMO this is THE best way to go.... http://nanotuners.nanocustoms.com/nanot ... cts_id=272

Of course you would just buy the lighting fixture, not that whole kit...

Since you have a 6g Nanocube..

I would like to know if the 2x18 PC Retro Kit will fit in My 6g Nanocube.

Here's the link to what and where I am going to exactly buy it:
http://nanotuners.nanocustoms.com/nanot ... ucts_id=34

p.s. Is this easy to install?

Yeah that 2x18 pc retro kit is made just for the 6 gallon cube, and it'll fit just fine. I have 3x under my heatshield, so you adding 2x should not even be a problem...

Not sure, I have never gone with nanotuners, I've gone with nanocustoms to just have my hood modded, so I didnt' have to do the work myself. If I had to do it all over again, I'd rather do it myself, as the work done on my hood was done by an amateur, and not the mighty chris unfortunately.

Oh well....a lesson learned....

No matter what upgrade you go with, you will have to add a fan or two to keep down the temp with the added heat... dont forget about that.

With the kit you are talking about you will also need to either buy the 3.18 heat shield or mod your current heatshield in order to fit the three bulbs under the hood. You will also need to order a ballast for the third bulb, your current ballast is located under the heatshield and has to be reloacated in order to make room for the bulb. In Chris' rersearch he said that the temp under the hood actually was less in the 3.18 conversion due to moving the ballasts out of the hood and having them mounted remotely. To get a full list of everything you need either call or e-mail Chris and tell him what you have and what you want it to be in the end and he can tell you the parts you need and give you prices.

A 6 gal with only 18 watts isnt going to get very good color out of the zoas. they may brown out a little in order get more out of the lighting.

you could keep most discosoma species shrooms and i have even seen someone who had a nice looking candie up high under that lighting - but yea upgrading is probably your best bet in the long run. there are posts here about nanocustoms and upgraded PC lighting kits and at least 4 reefers on this post recently have or are still debating the MH option
mutt bought the 70W viper
mike went with the 150W coralife
and i think rip bought and ed is leaning toward the 150W aquamedic

check out the conversation in both of eds threads on this subject before you go this retro route and if you want to go retro i believe jesse did something similar to what your looking at

lol I have changed My mind sooo many times.

Obviously I am a very picky person..but oh well.

Last night I bought online the 2x18w PC Retro Kit from nanocustoms..

http://nanotuners.nanocustoms.com/nanot ... 8a8d0a01c5

It is especially made for the 6g so it will fit.

My plan is that once I receive it...I'm gonna take My hood off My tank and have My bf's Dad install the light b/c he is very handy...

If any fans are needed I'll buy them and have him install those as well...

I'll post up a a pic with My results!

Wish Me Luck...

Oh and feel free to comment on My purchase/decision that I made!
