Thoughts on macroalgae

My LFS has some macroalgae in one of its tanks. It looks like little grapes and I think that it is Caulerpa. It looks kind of nice and was thinking about asking to buy some to add to my 12 gallon nano. I have heard that there are benefits to macroalgae--filtration, reducing phospahates but I have alse read that some aquarists consider this type of macroalgae to be a nuisance because it grows so fast and needs to be trimmed frequently. what do you think?

Macros can be beneficial in helping to keep mitrates in check and they are also great additions for herbivorous fishes to graze on but like you mentioned they can also be a nuisance, this is especially true if they get established well with no herbivores to thin them. If thats the case the can come pretty close to taking over and require almost continuous pruning to keep them in check, when they get like this they can over run corals and they take away from the beauty of the aquarium. With all of this in mind if you add any try to keep it confined to one area where you can easily prune/remove as necessary and don't try too ad alot of it because it will grow and fill your tank up as much as you will allow it to in short order.
