ten gallon hexagon nano

ok so ive been dying ot try this forever so i finally went out and got a ten gallon hex while it was on sale .

it came with a UGF which i probably will get rid of because i hate those and i dont even use them on my freshwater tanks.

i need to know what my options are for stocking it . i was thinking about shrimp ( like the sexy shrimp ) and im not sure what else if anything can go in there) oh and some live rock

other than that i have no clue about what i need as far as filteration and all that junk.

i know thse can require a lot of workand care and im am able to do that and willing to do that . ive been doing FW tanks for a while and think this would be a fun way to try SW.

thanks in advance for any suggestions and help !!

Would this be your first saltwater tank? I would do a simple setup. Around 1lb of live rock per gallon of water and a couple small powerheads for water movement. You could even use a HOB filter and throw in some carbon if you wanted.

As for stocking I would only add a single fish such as a:

Percula Clownfish
Ocellaris Clownfish
Firefish
Goby-Clown, Neon, Trimma, Masked, Rainford's, etc.

A good cleanup crew would be essential to your tank. I like Nassarius snails, Astraea snails. Margarita snails, and Scarlet Reef Hermits. Do plenty of research, and take it slowly.

I dont know your plans for corals but if you are planing on keeping corals you need to do a research of what fixture is better for your requeriments or you can always say hey i want to keep this and that coral and we can tell you what lighting will sute you better you can check stuff at

http://www.liveaquaria.com/default.cfm?siteid=20
http://www.atlantisaquarium.net/LPSofties3.html

This link is just so you can have an idea what would you like to get...then the buying is up to you LFS or online... also if you decide on corals you should pay that much attention on the 1lb of LR per gallon rule cause every coral that you get is attacked to a piece of Live Rock so the pounds add and you dont want alot of LR cause that will make things more difficult when placing corals..

about livestock you can keep this and well the ones i like:

Fish:
almost all Goby family:
Yellow watchman goby
Redhead goby
Greenbanded goby
yellow clown goby
Blue or gold Neon goby
HI fin red banded goby
Red striped goby
Trimma goby
Yasha goby

and other that dont come to my thoughts.... also

Ocellaris clownfish
Firefish

Well thats all i can think about it well the ones that will be Friendly fish and compatible with other fish if you want to keep more than one fish and if just keep one then there are much more semi & agressive fish that you can keep like other types of clownfish...

INVERTEBRATES:
Cleaning crew... snails:cerith, nerith, astrea, nassarius .... Hermits: blue legs or scarlet

Cleaner shrimp
Fire shrimp
SEXY SHRIMPS  (ilovethem)
Porcelain anemonea crab
Emeral crab
Pistol shrimp

and well more ... just choice ask for compatibility here and well be glad to help... but patience

P.S: MORE IMPORTANT THING :welcome TO NANOTANK.COM

If you are planning on trying to go full reef and keep coral then a 10 hex is not a good tank choice. Due to the small diameter and the depth it is hard to get sufficient lighting for corals. A better choice in the same size would be a standard 10 gallon.

thanks guys

yes this is my first SW tank so im taking it very slowley it will be a while before i even set up the tank ( gota buy power heads and a filter maybe a AC hob filter and then wait for the cycle to finish( i hav eheard you can use a cocktail shrimp to speed up the cycle ?

would i need a skimmer ? if so what kind should i look for

i was thinking a little live rock

maybe one goby ( ill look around my area to see what all the stores have i never buy fish from my work because our supplier sucks and i dont trust the fish, that and the only employee we had that had a clue about SW is gone)

i did at one time want to do some dwarf seahorses but i think that that might be a little too advancd for me with thier strict feeding and having to hatch shrimp on a regular basis.

would i need 10 pounds of live rock or can i do less ? im not really sure what live rock does and doesnt do .

and im really digging those sexy shrimp

im not sure about coral. i think maybe ill start with the live rock one fish and a cleaning crew and maybe take the coral jump later i dont want to take a head dive into unknown waters with out testing the temperature first . ;-)

thanks for the advice im going to look into some power heads at my work and see what we have

for substrate i assume sand is good

what about crused coral ? i have sone of that right now for one of my freshwater tanks to stabalize the PH

and as far as water should i just pay the money for premixed and save myself the hassle or should i learn how to mix my own ( onvoisly cheaper , but what would you do if you were new to SW )

thanks again

 Well here is what i think SW and FW sistems are almost the same you need just a filter, a pump, heater & tank thats it same just the difference is salt
anyways well you dont need alot of LR for the system so you will do fine with just 5-8LB of liverock and well just stick with your weekly water changes and for live sand the argonite one is the better one for saltwater tanks and dont even thing on crushed coral as a sand bed it will create alot of problems including High Nitrates and well save your self time and just get premixed water is not that expensive really :) ...

I think i got your idea of your tank and if you thinking of this i think is a great idea

TANK --> with 6lb of liverock, LS a fish and a school of sexy shrimps maybe like 2-4... that willl look so cool the sexy tank

But like always mentioned wait for your cycle before you add your cleaning crew or anything ...

so just do the LR,LS & water for 2-4 weeks and well add some flakefood on tank with nothing maybe 1 time every other day just to create some amonia so your cycle start but well the LR will help with that too...

Well Hope this helps alittle..
