From what i've read, its not good to use tap water at all.. You can buy distilled water from the grocery store..

I would strongly suggest not using tap water, but we had a nice debate in the of the other forums. basically run a full set of tests on your water. IF you come out OK then you MIGHT be able to have a successful tank (there are things that we don't test for that could be in tap water). Honestly if you are going the route of salt water and will be investing a large amount of resources (be time or money) I would get either an RO filter or an RO/DI filter. One could go buy premixed if the tank was small enough (I have three running right now and will soon be up to 4 or 5 in the coming year so the filter was a no brainer for me).

I agree with Tim you need to check ur tap water but even if you do tap water isnt always consistent. I have used tap water with no problems in my tank but usually i go to walmart they have a little R/O machine fill a couple jugs and im good. Oh and to conditon it if you decide to use it i use Prime made by Seachem.

Hi..I am a newbie.(very)...I have a 35 gal saltwater tank, i bought it used and it came with 50lbs of live rock. apparently anytime you move the rocks you end up with die off..thus my tank has alot of amonia right now, i am in the process of doing alot of water changes. with the rock came an anemone, and the last couple days ive seen a few feather dusters show up. Now...about the water, ive been told i CAN use tap water in my tank. Ive been premixing in a pail..and then pumping it into the tank , instead of filling tank and then adding salt and conditioner.
IS my tank going to be ok?
i also have only one powerhead running..its that enough?
Im thinking i should maybe have 2 in the tank. im not sure of the size or volume the one i have is..as it came used, and didnt know enough to ask.
if you can answer this for me... please use laymans terms...i havent been around long enough to understand all the teckie terms... lol
thanks for your help in advance.
